Ballpark cost of rebuilt motor

    My buddy is looking at a used wrx that is going to need the motor replaced. Its a 2004. Ideas on cost to rebuild the current motor? Cost to replace it altogether? thanks

    What all is broken, Rick? If its "just" heads, figure about $1000 in parts (good used or rebuilt heads, gasket kit, fluids, tbelt kit) plus labor (pull motor, rebuild time, install). If the bottom end needs work, could get to double that.

    Good used replacement blocks are in the $5-1000 range. $800 is reasonable for a known good runner. Problem is they only made them for a few years and theyre getting harder and harder to come by (especially locally). Labor will be a solid 3-8 hours less if theres no assembly, machining, etc involved.
