Was just driving home on the 35E bridge going south and had a Tahoe spin out right in front of me. I was already expecting it for some reason so slowed way down in anticipation. I went sideways even with light braking and managed to gain traction about 3 feet from 2 other cars and narrowly missed both. Please be careful out there everyone! The roads are BAD. Mods move thread if not in appropriate spot.
Forgot to mention, I was more worried about my brand new car than my own safety Worst. Feeling. Ever.
I had a set of ws80s on my wrx, picked up a set of Alpin PA3 for the STi. Let's just say I'll be going back to the Blizzaks.
How do the Blizzaks compare to the Continentals? I haven't had any complaints with them, all around great winter tire.
Glad to hear you're not the typical STI owner who didn't get the memo that their car came with summer tires. Might want to give the PA4 a look, also the Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 as well. Those both seem to be rated pretty well on Tirerack for results.
Yes, snow tires help on ice, but when you're going too fast, it doesn't matter what tires you have - you're not gonna stop quickly. Case in point - just before xmas, I was in my fiance's outback with her brand new General altimax artic's, coming down the mountains on I-70 in Colorado. Traffic was moving just fine, around 40-50 mph, but poor visibility. It was snowing, but roads looked "clear". All of the sudden, I come up to the guy in front of me, and he's on the brakes, sliding sideways, almost stopped. I eased into the brakes...instant ABS and no traction. I about shat myself but somehow instinctively thought to dodge over to the snow-covered shoulder...stopped almost instantly. Then I watched the guy behind me slide past me, but fortunately stopped in time. No wreckage, but my heart was racing! Moral of the story, snow tires don't make you invincible either, and always give people more room than you think!
Ha yup, minus going in the ditch and any wreckage. Rewind to two years ago, similar situation, but I wasn't so lucky. Some idiots stopped in the middle of a "snow cloud" on MN-95...I stopped in time, but the minivan doing 40+ behind me didn't. And that was the end of that saabaru
Well. I try not to be the "typical" STi owner! I'll probably look into Pirelli next season. I've become a fan of a performance winter tire for the way they handle on dry roads, but not so much anything else. Still perfect for my commute.
