Some of you may have seen my project car thread I posted... I'm just tossing some ideas around and if I go the way of another subaru I think I'd try to find a totalled wrx for cheap and then a clean L or RS chassis to swap everything into. I've seen guys on nasioc and 25rs.com picking up totalled wrx's for around 4-5g if thats not possible then this option would probably be too expensive for me. I've got garage space for 2 cars so I could just do this over time. Now where would I find one and how much is it going to cost me?? I've found some of the salvage sites online but whats my best bet? It doesnt matter if its a sedan/wagon or model year, mileage doesnt really matter the cheaper the better. A forester could work too the 2.5 block and different gearing would be fun but the rest of the car would be useless to me. Whats my options? If I was to go this route should I skip the donor car and source the parts as I go? I want the full driveline and eventually interior so I thought it might be easier to buy a totalled one and strip it then sell whatever parts I can that are left and junk the chassis in the end. Guys that have done this what do you recommend??
If your looking turbo I am not sure you will find anything much cheaper. If done right most people could get more then 5 grand parting the car out. I would say if you can find one for 4 grand thats as good as you will probably get for now. But the prices will always be going down over time.
Hey Check out http://www.southside-auto.com/. That's where I bought my totalled WRX in 2003 for $5000. They get them quite a bit, but they disappear extremely fast. Give them a call and maybe you can get on a list or something.
I was just thinking about this today too. Finding a wrecked Forrester XT or Baja Turbo would be sweet. 2.0l WRX's are probably much easier to find, though.
i got my 02 wrx parts car for 3700 shipped, it just takes some time to find one. the problem we run into is most of the cars are on the coasts or to the south so the shipping on them to us is a killer.
if you find one let me know, lol looking for a 2.5turbo. If you find them on the west cost it is much cheaper to ship them here then the east coast.
http://page10.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/m48754170 if only I could find a way to get this through customs...for parts. any ideas?
Hmmm, what are they asking for it? I really have no idea how to get a car across the ocean through customs...but if I did.
ship it over, simple as that. then, i would be mr. illegal pants and swap over vin plates and register it for "off road use"
429,000 ? which is $3959 at present bank rate. Getting it out of the country and on a boat is no issue, already have a car sitting in Wi that we shipped a couple months ago. Problem being, this one doesn't fall under any clauses in importing. Trying to work an issue through canada, but it's not looking too good, unless I store it here for a year, and ship then (15yr rule)
If I can get around all provisions under the law that deal with EPA/DOT/NTHSB I would be fine. I have, on my contract, shipment of one vehicle from Yokohama to St. Louis VPC for free. The issue is trying to find a way to keep customs and the rest of the government agencies off my back. The car would be towed from the VPC to a garage in the cities, and never see the street. If anyone has insight or experience in these matters, please let me know by PM or email.... [email protected] I know the "you should be able to do this" accounts, but I need solid facts and documentation supporting them for when I get to the outbound shipping office. I am dead serious, I have the money in my fun-fund account and a buyer for my current car.
I was at a car show this summer and talked to someone who had a late model MG. These cars are not US spec, but she and her husband each had one. They brought them in thru a place in Maine, but actually had them registered in AZ where the laws are a little lax. Once they were registered, they just transfered to MN. I had the name of the company, but don't know where I put it. Might help you.
