NA is the best way to go. lol and it really depends on what you want for power.

I dunno...but I'm beginning to like Mitsubishi turbos. They like boost and they make great top end power on their 16G+ turbos.

Had our little TD04L had a bigger hotside, it may make good solid 220-240whp.

I run a EVO3-16G-8cm^2 turbo on my setup. It's like Vf22+. Great all around turbo that you'll love for street. If you're getting into more of the frumrol thing, a bigger turbo may suit your needs.

or simply a 16G, FP, injectors, and tune. It just doesn't drop off on the top like the VF39.

    but that's just my opinion.

You need to set an idea on what kind of power you want to make. I am really happy with my VF39 on my 02. I make about 270 WHP.

yes, powerlevels. What are you loookin at for power?

    I make 270whp at 16-17psi on my EVO3-16G-8cm^2. This is on a hybrid WRX swap w/ 2.2L.
I've also ported a few things though...heads, TGVs and I have full headerback exhaust.

20G would do that. You might need E85, Meth, or Race gas to get to it.

If you wanted to do that with a vf turbo then you would need.
    Modded stock injectors
    External waste gate
    Huge intercooler
    Meth
    Ported TGV's
    Full exhaust
    Turbo inlet
    Awsome tune

...and a tranny to hold it (6spd or ppg)

If I were to upgrade my turbo (I drive an 02' as well) I'd be going with a 16g, unless I could find a good vf silly cheap.

Actually, a Disco Potato would be a crazy turbo with an EWG, but its a bunch of coin for not a lot of power gain. The spool would be outrageous.

I'd like to chime in. if you do some searching on mnsubaru you'll find a good amount of information. Otherwise, here's a few things to consider.

anything over 280+ and you need to be careful with a stock transmission (as stated above)

how reliable do you need your car to be?

start reading up on compressor maps for each turbo, you can usually find them with simple google searches. make sure it works with your power goals, driving habits, and your willingness to care for the car. (more power, more exotic set-up, more care)

personally...I'm now a big fan of the simple 16g on my car. yes, sometimes i wish there was a bit more punch in the higher rpm range and in 4th-5th, but still much better than a stock turbo. it spools crazy fast and makes 1st through 3rd gear pulls very fun and very quick compared to a td04. actually no comparison. plus no issues daily driver issues/concerns

I was going to mention pump gas as well...
I belive I read subaru recomends at least 93 octane (or was it 94?) for even a stock sti.

Though having to drive all over town for 94 octane or race gas is a great excuse to cruise around;)

Or I guess you could do meth/water injection to get around that

What kind of horse power numbers could one expect out of a 16g? I have been kickin this same question around. I would like to make a lil better than STI power. Is this a good upgrade for me? Or should i find a used vf39 and save the money? Sorry to hijack

Manual and filler cap say 93. The manual says 91 is ok. The 08 STI just says 91.

a good safe tune and pump gas with a 16g will produce better power than a stock sti. head to head comparison 0-80mph...the 16g wrx wins

agreed, but an 18g is nothing to sneeze at. great turbo, but people usually choose the 16g or 20.
