What Are Best Paints For My Silver Rims. Want Gold. Best Place And/Or Best Paint For Job. Thanks 01 RST
Powdercoat. You won't regret it. http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15184&page=6&highlight=powder+coating+group+buy
I used Duplicolor universal gold engine enamel. I really like the gold color. I have heard (rumor) that the heating process in powder coating can weaken aluminum wheels. I have no clue if there is truth behind this or not. but its easy enough to repaint every season/year or so.
agreed. I love the color on your wheels! haven't heard about it weakening wheels! I doubt it, but I suppose it's possible. and yea, you can buy approximately 7.3 billion cans of paint before it starts costing more than a decent powdercoat job.
Matt, do you have any idea how much it would cost to have the 4 rims sandblasted only? I'd primer and paint afterwards. Just sounds less labor intensive than sanding.
you can blast them at grimmspeed. so it should be pretty cheap. I think the whole weakening the wheel thing comes from the cooking process. you heat them up to XXX*F and let them cool. which is essentially annealing them metal, which can remove any tempering and soften the alloy, weakening the over all strength of the wheel. thats the theory behind it. its like that on steel but i dont know if its the same on alloys. alloys may not be tempered.
It sounds like the powdercoating is supposed to be a bigger problem on forged rims (like the stock STi BBS) - I wouldn't worry about it with RS/WRX rims.
yeah, I already knew that Josh. But Martin must not have. j/k Martin. Maybe Justin could invest in a larger box. $10 a piece would be worth it IMO. $40, then prime and paint. Sounds like a deal.
Oh, I know he would. Him and I have discussed blasting rims. But as of now, he would have to outsource. Where did you get yours done?
I've got a set I need stripped as well, where are you guys getting this done? I talked to Precision Wheel in Hopkins, they used to charge $100, now they want $200 per set, just for the blasting. wtf? :eek3: :eek4:
Follow the link... ^^^^^ Follow the link... Follow the link... I got the powdercoating done at the same time. That may be why it was cheap. If you are going to pay $100 to blast the, you might as well pay for the powdercoating and not deal with the headache.
Funny, I happened to call those guys last week when I was shopping around. He said they actually send the bead-blasting out to another shop, and it would be $16-$18 per wheel. The price sounded OK, I was just hoping for somewhere closer to St. Paul.
I drove there from Apple Valley. Worth the trip (twice). The rims look better than new. It was worth the money vs the hassle for me.
Does anyone local do low-temp powder coating? There was a place in Denver that did it, but it was pricey (~$400 IIRC) but didn't cause the stress on the forged wheels.
I wasnt sure. I know justin blasted his old wrx wheels in his garage inside a rubbermade box before he had the booth. I know someone w/ a blaster and all the stuff for powder coating I can give him a ring and see what it would be to have him do a set of wheels. probbaly would be cheaper w/ the tires already off the wheels.
