So I get in my car tonite after work. Talking to co-worker, it sat and idled for about 15 minutes. I left the parking lot and turned at the stop sign a block away. The road goes uphill a bit. I stepped on it to keep up with traffic. A gigantic puff of smoke billows out the tailpipe. (through the tinted windows I thought it looked white) It tapered off over the next block. It hasn't come back in the last 12 miles or so since I got back home. Every thing on this car is stock except the radio. The turbo is new about 10k ago. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to look for? I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow and see what they say. It should be under warranty yet. Thanks, Derek
Maybe someone placed a bread roll in your tailpipe and that white smoke came out when the roll shot out.
i've gone through this before with my last car... but it could be anything from piston rings, bad seals in the turbo, headgasket, etc... if it persists trouble shoot each of these... check your coolant level and keep an eye on it... if you've eliminated the engine as the cause check the turbo next... if it consistantly smokes until it warms up then you may be looking at rings... that was my issue... if that the case try running a heavier oil next oil change see if that stops it or lessens it
2002 WRX. It has never over heated. It had an oil seal in the turbo go bad one time. That turbo has been replaced. I put on another 50-60 miles today. No smoke. Nothing when I started the car this morning. Nothing under load driving down the highway. Car runs and idles fine. How easy is it to do a compression test? On my eclipse, it's one harness to unplug. Anyone interested in helping do a compression test? Beer will be involved. (after) Derek
you could have just heat soaked the piss out of it, hucked it up the hill and had a missfire or det. misfire would give you the puff, but would throw a code... maybe let it idle and crack open the oil filler cap. you should feel a little wind out of it, but no puffs of smoke. it should blow out a little but not a ton, momentarily put your hand over the hole and remove it. if the air pushes through violently and your idle really bumps it might mean you have a plugged up pcv or blowby line. also look at your coolant to see if there is any oil in it. please note, i'm a noob. i've not had a ton of experience with the subaru system, but on our old porsche we had to open the pcv up to atmosphere right off of the block. durring idle, condensation would freeze, plug it up, then push oil past the cam seals. on my sti this winter, i had oil move through from somewherel and it smoked like hell for 5 min. after i removed the frozen line, it was fine, but oil was still cooking in the exhaust for a good week after. if you smell/see nothing right now that would be a good thing.
it's easy but not needed... just keep an eye on it and if it does it again repost and we'll figure somethin out...
Well, today I drive out of town and my car starts bucking and stumbling at stop signs and lights. It just refuses to get going. After a couple of seconds, it gets going but goes slow. It starts alright, just doesn't go. The idle seems more lumpy than usual. No smoke that I can see. Just attitude. I guess it'll have to see the doc tomorrow. It just turned 50, so it should still be covered.
Error code showed mass air flow sensor. How often do these things go bad? Anyone have that happen to them? My buddy had a Maxima that has the mas go bad around 60K. It just seems a bit too early.
$201.88 for the part, $100 to trouble shoot, $20 to overnight part, $20 to install. This could have paid for my OBDII reader cable.
ouch. well good news though, it's not your block. did they try cleaning it before they ordered a new one? declorinated brakecleaner and a q-tip.
