The day prior to this was not fit for a duck and many of our students were scared off by the bad weather. As it turned out it was the best day of the year so far. The nice thing for the instructors is that it gives us a chance to hone our skills. Everyone had a fantastic time and no one was asking for more track time at the end of the day. Here are a few pics of Derek and me in the Spec Racer having a bit of fun. These are low HP cars that stick like glue with very little wieght. I am in the green helmet and Derek is in the fast one. Pics Courtesy of Steve Johnson, one of the other instructors and at BIR.
The first and last time we were out at BIR in the Spec Racers my friends and I would try and tuck our head as low as we could coming out of turn 10 and all the way down into turn 3, we pretend we were in Formula 1 cars. LOL But I was actually trying to get my head out of the crazy wind that kept blowing my head around, boy was it noisy. The only thing I had complained about those cars were the shifter, very sloppy, I had to always guess what gear I was in. And than I got courageous and tried trail braking into 3 and ended up doing a 360. You boys look good in those cars, it would be fun chasing each other in them.
It would be fun and yes they move around a bunch. Derek ran a 2.02 on this day, I think he could go faster but the school tires are crap. Me not so fast, I scared myself a few times.
I know this thing can cut corners but how fast is this thing on the straight a ways? Is it comparable to a 300, 400, 500 horsepower car on the straights?
I think I got it to top out at around 120mph down into turn 1. It does corner, but its not like what you would think, there is a point where traction will start to fall off. And because it has a 1600cc Ford engine, some with 4sp and other with 5sp there really isn't much torque, so you really have to know how to carry speed all around the track especially out of 10 if you're trying to drag race your friends.
