So last night on my way home from dropping a friend off from work my motor went.... I got knoc and then nothing. Reguardless i have a new motor to drop in it i will just need some misc parts and i need some help with what i will need.

Right now this is what i have, all of which is brand new:

    EJ257 block halves
    Balanced sti crank
    Rods
    New pistons
    Andrew Tech 2.0 built heads
    262 cams

This is all i have. But i do have a lot of parts i can reuse off of the old WRX motor but what should i not reuse? Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated

    Nick

Oil and Water pumps should be replaced. Any gasketry, I'd get a full engine gasket kit from MTKA. I forget the part number, but it has everything you need for a re-assembly.

I think you could salvage the oil and water pump, just make sure you rebuild the oil pump. +1 on the full gasket set. I would also get a new oil cooler.

miles on the motor might help determine what could be reused. if the water pump has over 80k on it id say get a new one cheap insurance that that one dose not go out

I would advise against using your old oil pan, oil cooler, things that oil has touched.

It is interesting that you think the oil pan should not be resused. Being that the OP will have to take off the pan anyway, don't you think it could be cleaned in solvent? Or too much hassle because of the nooks/crannies?

I'm sure it can be done, its going to be very hard to get it completely clean though, for the price of a good pan for me its worth the peace of mind, you spent how many thousands of dollars on a build and its F'd because of some metal you missed inside the pan.

^ Good point. Might as well go with the 2.5L pan to clear larger headers and why not throw in a beefed up pickup tube.

Ten minutes in any hot-tank will clean an oil pan. I would be more worried about the baffling that is in the pan than the style. It is pointless to use a STi pan if you will never need it.

I do not see a reason to replace the oil pump. It can be cleaned out with little trouble. If you like to cut corners however, maybe you should get a new pump.

The oil to water heat exchanger is the major thing that needs to be replaced. You will never get all the particles out of it, unless you find a way to hook up a cleaning machine used for transmission coolers.
