well im getting ready to buy some winter tires, and was pretty much planning on getting some winterforces because they are always so damn cheap and i didnt think i needed anything fancy. well anyway, to my amazment tirerack is having some serious close out prices on revo 1s which makes them even cheaper than winterforces (for 15s anyway) and on top of that there is currently a $50 reward card (american express) for buying blizzaks from tirerack, which covers shipping and a little more. im pretty much positive im guna pick up a set now. just though i would pass it on since i know everybody else is getting ready for winter too!

I've always sworn by the nokians, but I have to say, after driving Joels car on the ice last year, the revo1's gripped WAY better on the shear ice.

I think nokians are still the king on snow, but the revos seemed to handle that damn well too.

What are they replacing them with anyway?

yep my assessment is that generally the revos are better on glare ice and the hakkas are better on snow and dry pavement.

Those look like they will do great on ice, but not quite as well on snow/slush/hard compact snow. IMO, but if your up in the Duluth/Lutsen area with all the hills, your probably on the right track, I can image what driving is like up there after some serious snow. I am going to buy winter tires that will give more snow performance and ice 2nd since I travel the hwy's most of the time getting to work, I need a tread with a design that will clear the snow out of the tires and dig in and down to the pavement. So I'm replacing my old ones with the Bridgestone Blizzak WS=50 w/UNI-T (Closeout Sale). And here's something else to consider, get a smaller with to help with winter driving, you definately do not want to go bigger than stock. Enjoy!

^ indeed narrower tires cut through the snow.

I'm confused. The ws-50 and the revo have similar tread patterns and both are studless snow and ice. If anything the 50 seemed to be more blocked and less focused on water/slush removal. Where you thinking of a different tire?

Maybe I'm a little confused working the late night hours. The patterns are simular, but the blocks on WS-50 are gapped farther a part which should give you more biting power thru snow and slush and help with water at higher speeds, over all they are graded simular. The graph above did not pan out as on their website, everything is moved to the left. What would be really nice is if I could work at home, than I won't really need a snow tire, but than again what fun would having a subaru w/o snow tires be in MN. LOL

What are your thoughts on this, it maybe worth while to do our own winter tire test this season. LOL

Oh, I'll be back for the winter car control at DCTC this winter. Last year was a blast. I will say that the other blue STi there was on studless snow and ice tires (WS-50s I think) and he shredded/chunked his tires pretty bad that day. Mine, while worn a bit, didn't look any worse for the wear (Winter Sport M3s).

There wasn't that much snow at that event from what I recall, but it was bitter cold. Its not a good idea to be pushing your snow tires on pavement w/no snow. LOL Their too soft. I'll see you out there.
