So my wife and I can NOT play the game of Scattergories without kicking and punching and fighting rediculously. Seriously the last time we could not get through ONE round without the game flying across the room. Some of the past arguments have been... Is Scottland is a state? Is a worm an insect? and finally: what blew everything up today... Is silver made of metal? -It IS a metal, its not really "made" of metal. Do any of you have these problems? What do you think?
I only hit my girlfriend when we're around our daughter to re-assert my position as Alpha of the Pride. We don't really fight over games, though. We just kick each other around for fun. However: No, Scotland is not a state. A worm is not an insect. Silver is not made of metal, much like I am not made of human being.
My wife and I don't do much for board games, but we do have almost nightly MarioKart matches. Those can get real interesting real fast. Nothing is more gratifying than holding on to a blue shell until you get to second and she's leading. On the flip side, nothing sucks quite like being almost to the finish line and having your wife hit you with a blue shell and then pass you for the win.
I think it is poor wording. made of = built However, I think she was saying the same thing that you are... she just said with a very poor selection of words. I agree Silver is a metal it is not built from metal. But, unless she was really saying that silver is made up of peices of metal put together i would give it to her. I mean there is a very fine line here. Poor choice of words and being right isn't always better than an angry wife
OK, have you guys ever played scattergories? It is not scientific facts were looking for. The stategy of the game is to quickly think of unique words that meet the criteria of the catagory. Would you seriously CHALLENGE that silver is not a metal? Silver is "made of" pretty much 100% metal if we are just talking plainly like the game should be played (in my opinion). If you want to be strict as hell and scientific, then silver is definetly "made of metal" because silver is not going to be 100% silver. It is going to contain other metals the vast majority of the time in very small amounts. My wife said the exact same thing..."that's like saying a human being is 'made of' human being". NO! That's being a frickin' a-hole prick. Silver is definetely made of metal, whether being scientific or just talking plainly. Moving on, I also said the Scotland is a state... Is Scotland a "state"? It is Now. Scotland is a constitutent country, which means it is a country within a country. It shall still be a state after it acheives independence, but not a state like Ohio, a Soveign state, which is a proper country. 100% Scotland is a state. My wife said that a worm was an insect. I challenged that and she FLIPPED OUT! Thank you for anyone who agrees that it is not. Lets think of it another way. If the question said, "things that are NOT made of metal" Would silver be logical answer? I say hell no.
This game involves some reasoning and being educated. Therefore two fools can't play this game...not that your fools, but some people never want to lose in a game or get out of control when they are losing hence fighting or throwing the board pieces allover the house.
No, I've never played scattergories. If it's as serious as the internetz, I don't think I want to, either. Additionally, I don't think I would take anything from answers.com as sworn gospel. According to the definition of a state, Scotland is not a Sovereign State since it formed a Union with Great Britain in 1707. Combined, the UK is a Sovereign Nation comprised of multiple countries, not states. Imagine the US formed the American Union with Canada. The US would not immediately become a state by itself. The Silver argument could be broken down in both directions. However, I would say that the statement "Silver is made of metal" would be incorrect from personal opinion. And worms are still not insects.
so I have to assume that you can tell me exactly what silver is made of? and when you say "silver", then thank you.
The argument isn't about the scientific definition of an element, it's the language used in a statement. To try and prove your point of being right in a game better, perhaps you could explain the instance of your debate within the confines of the game. I wouldn't say that the metal "silver" is made of metal, it is silver.
Right, that's what I've been saying the whole time. Silver is metal or silver is silver. Silver is not made of metal nor made of silver. Have you been arguing against yourself this whole time?
We recently had an issue with Pictionary. We agreed that the plural form of the word was acceptable, which worked until we got to the word slack. Slacks are much different and not the plural form of slack. Needless to say it is doubtful that we will ever play pictionary again.
This thread is frustrating to read. I say just whip out some cribbage or something. You're obviously taking these interpretive games a bit too seriously.
