First of all, Is there one?.. i thought i seen one somewhere but google aint doing justice for this... if so, any idea where can i get ahold of just the engine?
sweet site....but not really helpful for a go-kart engine. Subaru makes a few 2-cycle motors on lawn mowers and such, but just 1-cylinders.
oh okay chux... thanks.. oh and one more noob question/s... How does running rich on afr effect engine(longterm) and how about running lean? and i dont mean too rich or lean so that it wont start/work..
lean is bad, leads to hotter cyl temps and detonation, worst thing about a rich condition would be washing the cylinders down with fuel and making the oil not do its job, leading to premature wear
I dont think subaru makes a dedicated go kart motor. They make Robin motors which are the little guys like in the pic chet posted. Also I heard they made some polaris stuff for a while. The best option for a go kart is to get an actual car motor and go from there. The EA81 would be a rockin go-kart motor. pretty much nothing involved in running it, or maintaining it except oil changes. I have one of these sitting around....
A 4 cylinder motor would be a very POOR choice for a go-kart motor. It weighs a ton. It requires a huge radiator and other assorted bits. It requires a transmission. If you want a decent go-kart motor you might be better off asking around the karting forums. You could use the Robin/Subaru motors, they would work fine for a hobby kart. For racing, it's best to stick with what works. Especially since most of that stuff has regulations and requires certain motors and displacements. Now if you were making a sand rail or a dune buggy, I'd say go for it, get an EA or an EJ and go to town. But a gokart with a 400lb 4cylinder automobile engine wouldn't be any fun. Try a sportbike motor if you want 4 cylinders.

thanks for info... so i looked at those robin engines... and how much horsepower would you want in a gokart(usual average i mean)? im just wondering cause i have a small engines class and for my second engine we have to bring one in ...
thats what I say.... once my shop is built, I am thinking and planning an off road buggy designed with a boxer engine maybe....
A Go-Kart is NOT a Dune Buggy. WRX powered Dune Buggy = WRX powered Go-Kart = :thumbsdown: You will have a very hard time making a go kart with a full Subaru transmission (or possibly an older VW beetle style) and all the parts required for a WRX motor to run being placed on a small tube steel frame on tiny little wheels. It is completely pointless to even try, as the sheer weight of the thing would make the handling completely worthless. A dune buggy is a great idea, but dune buggies aren't small. Most of the ones I saw out at Glamis were about the size of a Miata if you want a comparison to the size of a car. The motors were mounted in the rear, and I'm guessing the trans was either custom or some sort of VW RR type adapted to the EJ motor output. Usually one or two seats...although the huge custom ones had 4 seats in them. SO, to re-iterate the point: An EA or EJ powered Go Kart is stupid and pointless, and probably impossible An EA or EJ (preferred) powered Buggy or Rail would be absolutely awesome.
i am with Jason on this one, i have driven crotch rocket powered go karts and those arent even as much fun...now our Baja Bug powered buggy on the otherhand, thats different but like Jason said its not nearly as small and doesnt have the same aim
how'd I know I would get called on that... I knew that posting it... but with that size engine etc, it's about as close to a go-cart as you could get... ha ha
