    Event Description/
ScheduleBrainerd International Raceway's 40th Anniversary Festival of Speed

    Something for Every Motorsports Fanatic!

2008 marks the 40th anniversary of Brainerd International Raceway and the dawning of a new era. Virtually every form of motorsports has competed throughout BIR’s history. Remember the good old days… when USAC Indy Cars and stock cars hit the track…the legendary Donnybrooke Trans Am and Can Am battles in the 1960’s…the famous SCCA Uncola Nationals in the 1970’s…IMSA Camel GT…ASA…snd the present day NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars. What a time it has been.

BIR has always been the home to the fastest of the fast.

So put September 12-14 on your calendar for an historic celebration of the past and the debut of BIR’s new 2.5 mile, 13 turn road circuit. It will be a weekend of fun and festivities, no doubt including professional level bench racing. Road racing clubs, classic car clubs, performance vehicle shops, motorcycle racing clubs, go kart racing competitors, vehicle manufacturers, nostalgia drag racing exhibitions and more have been invited to this event.

You can even test out the new track firsthand! All enthusiasts will have the opportunity to experience the new course. Track touring for the casual enthusiast, lapping groups for those who desire more speed and race groups for vintage racers. Motorcycles are welcome too. The entire BIR facility will open during this weekend, with an off-track formal banquet Friday evening and the premiere of BIR’s first-ever documentary video. Great eats continue with an at-track party Saturday evening.

In an effort to keep costs down for our guests, weekend participation for road course touring, lapping and racing will be a mere $20 per driver per day (pre-registered) with a $10 charge per day for spectators. Camping will also be available this weekend including BIR’s full service RV sites and plenty of open camping for everyone!

We invite you to join us…whether you’re an active participant at BIR, new to motorsports, knew track founder George Montgomery personally or just want to relive the good old days. This promises to be a weekend to remember and the first day of a new era at Minnesota’s premier motorsports facility.

I would encourage everyone to come on out bring your car and participate. Derek and I will be there ready to give folks rides in our Subie or the Z06 Vette.

We will also have a Demo trailer with 2 Simulators in the back for those that would like to try it out.

$10 to watch is kinda the suck tho. Hopefully for $10, photog's will have full access to the sides of the track to get some good pics.

I am so there!!1!! Does the "touring" group get up to any kinda real speed? I would rather be in a novice lapping group, but it appears I am not qualified :(

I think the Touring will not get up to those speeds. So why do you think you're not qualified to be in the Lapping group?

"The track is also open to anyone who wants to drive their vehicle around the course. All you need is a street-legal vehicle and $20. Speeds will be limited to 50 mph, unless you have high-speed lapping experience or a valid competition license. Be the first to tour, lap or race on this new course."

So you're telling me you have neither? Well if thats the case you will just have to take the opportunity to catch rides with those who do. There are other options and it'll still be alot of fun. The last thing we want to do is see a novice get into trouble.

So what's your experience like?

ps. 50mph in the corners is still alot of fun. LOL

Neither. I have no track experience (except for 1/4mi lol), but have been in the twisties and am well aware of my abilities (which are less than those of my car).

I will prolly be going anyways :)

While there is no specific Tech you need to pass, I will tell you that it is in your best interest to have your brakes and fluids checked.

Stock WRX small brakes are NOT sufficient for the higher speed sessions. Any fluids leaking will be taken very seriously.

I'll be there. May not have a car to drive, but at $10-20 a day its cheaper than the silly State Fair (really sucks living right there).

Hope to see lots of Subarus out there!

i dont have any on track experience but i have been rallycrossing for several years. however, i assume that doesnt count and i would be in the slow group if i came out?

and yeah 50mph still sounds like fun and less wear and tear on my car so i guess i would be fine with that too.

If my DMS 40s come back from rebuild in time I'll try and get them on the Legacy, along with the Kumho tires from my wagon. Would be good for a couple laps. Maybe one of the Wagner's can ride along and yell in my ear.

If nothing else, I'd like a some laps with skinny boy, Derek. I want to see what he can do on the black stuff.

I just received a response from Tom Fuehrer who is in charge of this event. Hopefully this will and the big question of how they plan to hand the situation if there is a large turnout. I still plan to be there for Saturday, and possibly Sunday.

"Hi Chong - how are you doing these days?

We will have a good turn out for the lapping portion of the event. If it looks like we have too many people for one run group we will alter the schedule and create novice and advanced groups. the track can handle a fair number of cars on it though.

We may need some help with pace cars during the "touring" portion of the event, maybe you can help us with that?

I look forward to seeing you there!

    Tom"

I really want to go do this. Might be stretching my weekends a bit thin though.

But I just got some killer tires for the SE-R from Sheen that I'm just dying to use...

that would be nice, but it would increase the cost of the event dramatically for me. So if it happens, I'll be driving the Sentra. It's funny when your "race" car gets better mileage than any of your other vehicles (at least when cruising, the SE-R can do 35+mpg, the Altima about 30mpg, and the truck about 13-15mpg. When pushed hard, the SE-R gets about 10mpg).

$20 that is well worth it. It is normally over $250 to go up there.

Is there a cap on drivers? I wouldn't mind going up on that sat. How ever i think i need a new alignment and to get on a hoist and check out my front suspension on the 240 first.

I am officially signed up for Saturday, I would expect Saturday to be the busier of the three. Sunday is still on the back burner for me. Now I need to decide if I want to get those RPF1's for the Yoko's sitting in my office. But in the mean time I better get my wg arm bolts back on so I can have some boost. I will hopefully have an under carrage by then for more testing.

Road course has never been closed. I believe there are some SCCA/other organizations events. The thing is they are never advertised.

There is still work to be done, however it looks like we could see not just SCCA but all the major series coming back to BIR. They will also be repaving the entire track next year. There will also be additional curbing to allow the track to pass all appropriate certifications.

I'd expect that they're putting in FIA curbing or something similar. It's essentially a curb to keep the endges of the track from crumbling, that's built with a very specific shape.

The red and white stuff is FIA curbing.

You are correct FIA however they are looking at a system that would allow them to add and remove curbing depending on sanctioning body requirements. Not real clear on this but it sounds neat.

Sounds complex and expensive. What really is the difference in curbing requirements for different sanctioning bodies? Is there an SFI standard?

I have no idea, come on up to BIR and talk to the man that designed the track, he will be there. The owners of the track will also be there, he might even take a run around the track in his Formula Atlantic car/toy.

There was a lot of good reviews from the group that ran last weekend. I still have to touch base with a friend who participated in that event for more details.
