I was at RS Motors the other day doing some photography for Ron's new website when I found my old piston with a broken ringland. This is what happens when you let someone who ISN'T Ron tune your car. Pretty sure it happened when they re-plumbed my wastegate and the hose slipped off in the middle of a run. The dyno read 40+ psi for a bit before they let off the throttle.
Bikerboy said I was the one that broke it because it fell apart in my hands in the front office. I knew it wasn't me.
That would be a Mr. Terry Stamper of WRC tuning renown, using the dyno at DB Performance. He was attempting to tune the stock engine with a Cosworth/Pectel ECU.
Glad you are making progress! sorry about the ringland fails in this thread. =( I'm prepared for my stock 2.0L to blow up any day now.
In comparison to the 2.5, the 2.0 is indestructable! You'll be fine...just keep those exhaust valves properly lashed.
No, it can't be improper lashing, it has to be Holiday gas! the gas comes from a completely different source that has additives to burn exhaust valves. It's science.
Are you sure? I was always told that it was because you'd let the blinker fluid run too low!? Gotta check it when you're filling up your gas at Holiday and make sure to top it off.
I never found the fill nozzle for the blinker fluid, is it near the 710 cap? I was also told that my muffler bearing was shot recently, how do I go about replacing that?
The fill nozzle is just to the left of the murferator. You have to replace the whole muffler when the bearing goes out....they're a one piece unit.
That would probably be best. Dump it and get a VTEC. They have the best murferators that money can buy in them!
I'm astonished by the number of responses to such a simple thread, but I like the idea of a broken ringland gallery for sure. Broken ringlands and ovaling of cylinders seems to be the result of running 2.5s with high boost.
Is this a "new" problem or always been with the 2.5? Does it ever score the walls or do new pistons solve the problem?
I caught this before any cylinder damage was done. However, drop in pistons(manley) allowed too much piston/wall clearance and would have resulted in piston slap. I had to bore it to the next available size, 99.75mm.
I heard a story of your engine ovaling its walls after BIR in '11. I'm sure had the car been prepped and tuned well it would still be running with the same engine. And just for the record, the Speeding Bullet came from RS Motors with a dead piston to what it is now a 10sec 8500rpm full interior street car. what pistons do you have now? I doubt it's stock......
How about we discuss this over lunch like men? Or you boys can settle this the old fasion way on the only place that matters, on the track? 600 donkeys vs 600 donkeys in shorts wearing flip flops.
Not that I know anything, but that looks like "cast" metal to me, and it seems like I've heard in the past that STi pistons are "forged." This is not a problem for STi's then?
Typical jack-assery from the Fuji. Terry was a good guy and I'm not going to say much else on the matter. Obviously he knows his stuff, having worked for Cosworth and doing engine management in F1. The stock STi block is too weak. That's life. I've moved on. Matt built us a 22T hybrid with a custom fuel system and an HTA 35R: twin scroll and swain tech coated. The new pistons are coated CPs. I was just sharing a piece of history (and a commonality within the STi community) via a photograph.
you really think that's typical me? I wouldn't be saying what I said if I didn't heard what was said. don't think i don't know what you told Chong. You think Ron can save the stock piston? It can't even save itself even on the stock tune. That's what I'm saying. That's good that Matt helped build that new engine for you. Better not let Chong drive it.
Don't think I don't know what Chong knows what was said you said what was saying what said is what I said you were saying! You're half correct about the stock pistons. They're ****e. But, with a proper tune, you can keep them...you just won't go as fast as you would with aftermarket options. C'est la vie.

Try saying that five times. Lmao I know what you said and he said and what I said, but does it really matter? People say dumb things out of frustration in the moment. Water under the bridge.
Jack assery from fuji? Seriously? He is easily the most non jackass out of all the jackasses associated with this jack assery site.
