A friend's EJ205T 2002 WRX locked up on the freeway last week. We got the rad out and could see the geared idler peeking out through a hole blasted through the timing cover. The pulley clearly blew its bearings, locked up hard, then sheared the bolt that attaches it (front half of bolt still in pulley) Now, my question, the back half of the bolt threaded out of the block easily - but, our block face looks like the picture below. Is there a substantial amount of metal missing? Is this a bearing riding surface in anyway? Is this going to toast the block? Can I ask MORE QUESTIONS?
Haha, after looking at these giant zoomed in pictures of my own for a few minutes, I realized that's in the water pump housing. Can probably take care of that. I assume with this much metal being tossed around in the timing cover, everything probably got covered. Any bearing surfaces I should worry about? Will obviously be replacing all the pulleys, how about the cam pulleys?
For sure, hoping for the best, as it locked up all-of-a-sudden with the clutch in, but the heads will be coming off and disassembled.
