So the tires that came with my car are used and not so great, I'm debating between putting high performance all season tires on or ultra performance summer only tires. My situtation is that I like to put my "summer" prodrive pff7's on early in the season and they stay on late into the year and I migh encounter a little snow (less than 1inch any more I'll put on the stockers with dedicated snow tires). My only concern is that I'll be loosing too much summer performance if I buy a tire that will be useful maybe 1 time out of 10. I don't auto-x or race my car in any way, just spirtied driving and driving to and from work and school daily. I need a tire that'll last long but have decient performance and be cheap < $140 a tire my choices are pirelli p nero a/s or summer spec hankook rs2 (really love their snow tires) kumho spt they'll be in 235/40/18 size as well
high perf all season is a waste of money in summer, and even more worthless in snow than some usual all-seasons.
PIRELLIS!!!! they are strong long lasting and make excellent tires. i can promise you that nothing will ever go on my car other than pirellis and michelins. the two best tire companys in the world IMO
Seeing a lot of "brand / model ftw" .... anyone mind stating -why- they think that tire would fit the bill?
ive owned 2 sets of michelin pilot sport ps2's and 1 set of rz's and i now have pirellis on my subaru and my buddy had a set of pirellis on his dsm. ive driven over 20 miles on the highway on two completely flat pirellis before when it was cold out (looong story) and i still use them as my DD tires. no leaks or anything. so thats why i am so passionate about both those brands.
yes that too please, I'm looking at the falken azenzis and am kind worried about the 200 treadwear rating:ugh: But for $200 for 4 new ones I can't really go wrong, right??
I will never buy a set of "no season" tires again, unless they are going on a truck. They make too many compromises for me.
no, i just don't have a use/time for a strictly anything type of tire. also I put them on my wife's car
And what for spring and fall? That is what I have been pondering lately, as I will probably soon get a new set of wheels for summer use, and was thinking of the following choices for rubber...thinking about making a thread with a poll: If I had 2 sets of wheels, what rubber should I put on them? Summer tires on one, winter on the other: tradeoffs, summer tires don't do so good when temps get near or below freezing, winter tires don't do so good when temps get much above freezing...anyone who lives in this region is familar with how long we get that borderline period, which makes me consider two alternatives: Summer tires on one set of wheels, and a good set of all seasons (preferably something that performs better in the cold) on the other. Winter tires on one set, all season on the other for spring, summer, fall. I've never driven a real summer tire, but have no complaints about my michelin mxv4 all season during dry or wet conditions, but in snow or ice, they kinda suck, or it is just my crappy abs making me think that
under 40 degrees F use the winter tires... Over use the summer tires.. Spring warms up enough for summer tires... and in the fall when it cools down to much use your winter tires... makes sense to me.
+1 If these werent so expensive in a 17" I would get them for my summer tires. they have great dry grip, and stellar wet grip. I have never spun these from striaght out acceleration (including while i was boosted). getting wheel spin from lateral rotation is another story. I wouldnt use them in the snow since i have been spoiled by nokians. Sum it up: great dry grip, awesome wet grip, long tread life (60k of abuse), kinda pricey in big sizes, good on gravel.
2 sets of wheels in the cities ment sweet summer tires, and all seasons that were good in snow. 2 sets of wheels in the sticks ment sweet summer tires and sweet winter tires.
