Ok, well my luck with transmission is not what one would call luck!!!! My 1st 2001 2.5rs 5mt went down about three weeks ago, most likely a bearing in the rear end since the output shaft had quite a bit of play in it. So ordered a 55k used transmission off of a guy on rs25.com and that one is on its way out now. I know its bad luck and not me being a ****ty driver. The car has never been launched with the new ej207 in it, and never will be, I let the synchros do their job and have never slam shifted. the only thing I have to worry about it roughly running around 300awhp through it. Now I know the transmissions will hold it, its the gears that are the problems, and so far it doesn't seem to be a gear issue, shifts fine just makes lots of noise that is only variant upon speed. So to get to the point. Does anyone rebuild transmission here that has some experience and would any of those people alow me to look over their shoulder during the rebuild so i can try to slowly attain the knowledge to do this sort of ting myself some day ( I would gladly pay a little bit more to make that happen) ??? Many people have said, oh just get another used tranny, but honestly, I have learned my lesson and am done with keeping my fingers crossed on used items like that. I would rather spend a little more and get it rebuilt. So who here is confident in rebuilding my 01 5mt and could get it done in the next couple weeks??? Thanks guys -Matt And yes, I know I should do a 2004 or newer driveling swap, but you can't do that for under 3k, and we all know how 90% of the STi's have been treated out there!!!
Yeah I know, just haven't been able to find anything under 3k for all items needed. I would rather spend 1k or there so on getting this one rebuilt. Plus I am working with a pretty much brand new NA clutch and want to get my money out of it if its possible.
Ok, I have been a member with MNSC since pretty much the beginning, over 4 years now. Well before MNsubaru was formed, and once MNsubaru was formed I became a member on here. I don't know anyone on MNSC that would work on my transmission or anyone for that matter that has the Subaru knowledge that most of you guys do on here!!! Everyone should take that as a compliment too. I will always be part of MNSC since I am a club officer there an love helping in events and helping make the decisions on there the club is going. But I know where to come when I Subaru specific needs and that is MNSubaru. I will make the comment before someone else says it. "you rarely ever post on MNsubaru" and well I never post unless I have something worth typing, and I know plenty of people who just type to type. I am not interested in watering down anyones threads like many others are.
hey, if you want to start a sh*t throwing fight by all means I'm great at it, I have had 27 years of experience doing it, but I would rather be the bigger person and not....... (but please, if your gonna knock me or sites I have been a part of for quite some time, then do it in person, or even call me and we will chat about it, 952.240.4001) but thats just me I guess.
transmission rebuild is a pain in the ass....my version 7 was rebuild 5/6 gears tighting abd I telling you it wasn't cheap to do that....after that my clutch got shot and it cost me fortune for replacing a new one into it. matt your car is bad azz with the jdm swap, but haven't you enough to spent more money rather driving it?? btw legacypgt aka micheal wray and david wray give you hope for your tranny rebuild
Yeah I was gonna call Mike, I have his number, I know he is always super busy though and I hate putting him in a spot like that if he has enough work already. I am not worried about getting the trans out, I am getting quite efficient and pulling the motor or trans, we got the old one back in the car in about 2 hours, not hard at all, just nuts and bolts and a little fluid. I know I should be upgrading the gears, but v6 gears alone are over 1k, synchros 260 and bearings 260 and gasket kit about 70 or so. A 6mt swap is much more and I know its hard to do for under 3k. I am not trying to build a bomb proof trans, not until this winter, I just want a rebuilt trans I can baby and just drive the car some more. I have spent over 6k in getting the motor rebuilt, FMIC, PFC, Datalogit, vf34, koyo, hoses ect. and just want the lil bastard back on the road.
I got few peeps from germany subaru owners....they have a bunch a tranny for sell....but I haven't got back for long, I and can check it for you if you want a 6tm/uk/jdm tranny.....but I suggest you to do the rebuild.....again the tranny are very expensive....oversea shipped SEHR TEUER....
He's new, damn boys...like you've never said anything like that..... And he's really not like that, just too many dumb comments as of recent.
I try to hold my tounge when possible as to not stir the pot, but Matt works his ass off on his car and rarley calls for help. Now he does and get jumped on. I am sure he(bielke55) is a cool guy, (never met him) it just came across real ****ty. I understand that there as been several dumb comments latley but that does not make his any better. "your an ass" may have been to far, "your BEING an ass" would have been better since I don't know the guy!!!
Thanks guys, I try my best to be the same person online and off, and I guess its been portrayed well. I got a little defensive, I just have to deal with this kind of stuff on MNSC behind the scenes all day long, getting PM's from everyone being "butt hurt" over comments, I guess I try to live by "I would never type anything i wouldn't say in person" motto. Anywho, I would love to try to rebuild my own trans, I have a spare and plan on doing it this winter with a little supervision. I just can't justify doing it myself alone right now because if i screw it up it will be a very expensive and time costly learning experience. I know there are a few Subaru specific tool needed to rebuild and get everything re-assembles properly and I don't want to guess at it.
Well, I ordered the 2001 Impreza Transmission/manual Transaxle section for like $40. So I can see what I am getting myself into, and if not, I will have it for reference over the winter for rebuilding the other one.
Sorry...im just going off all the nice things everyone had to say to me on MNSC... everyone is right i dont know the guy and i have said stupid things before to people in the past, but yet hasnt everyone? I am sorry. What i should have said is dont go to Skip W/ Kennedy Trans... he thinks falling out trans plugs is normals.
Children recess is over, please come inside for milk and cookies, and then get your mats out for nap time.:eek4:
I"m looking to rebuild mine soon here if I can. doing a hybrid build with my L gears and mixing the final drives for a REAR BIASED thing. L gears w/ 3.900FD (L tranny has broken 3-4 shift fork only, and worn dogs but still good use). Running a 4.444 rear diff. I have a center diff where I took out the VLSD to run this final drive setup. Press in press out, align shift forks so you can put together the case halfs......remember that big c insert/bearing/thingy, tighten that big nut that holds the gears/bearings?? New main saft seal!!! don't look too bad, I'mma learn on mine...then muahahah!!
You want to get your car on the road, yes. You are OK with spending over a G doing it. Why waste your money with something that will fail again? Yes, 3-4k for a 6mt swap is a chunk of change, but knowing that your trans is up to some abuse is priceless. Cars can be fast, reliable, and cheap. Pick two...
Trust me, I will be going the 6mt route eventually, I just don't have the cash for that, well I have the money but I am still paying off a back surgery that has easily set me back the price of a 6mt. So, the rebuild is to get me through the summer and over the winter or in the spring I will either be building the 5mt up with 1-3 RA gears and WRX 4-5 or just getting a 6mt trans. This trans is being rebuilt knowing I will have to baby it and I think it will be good learning experience. I'm not affraid of the rebuild, just gonna take my time and make sure there is no guessing on anything, I think the shop manual will answer some of the questions I have.
PPGs would be an option, what did they run Jason? and like i said Matt, if you want or need some help i am always more than willing to come lend a helping hand
Is it a 4.111? If thats the case, find yourself a JY slammer out of an older legacy. It should get you by for a couple months. There's some around the state for <$400.
