Ok, I am trying to get my cam gears off so that I can pull my cam shafts off and eventually remove my head from my short block. PROBLEM... those cam gears were put on by Heman himself in the Subaru factory. So far I have twisted and allen wrench, bent a cressent wrench, broke a socket driver, and gotten pretty pissed off.

Can I take the cam shafts off without removing the cam gears? Look at the picture and let me know what you think. Thanks.

Note... (add to the caption in the picture).... "without pulling the cam gears or plastic shield off the assembly."

I know its not ideal but have you tried a impact wrench on a low setting?

intake cam gear bolts usually arent that bad...exhaust side on the other hand sucks.

heavy duty impact or big cheater bar

You can take the cams off without removing the cam gears. I've seen it done several times due to the same problem you are having.

You can take it off, but you'll have a hard time putting in the cam seal correctly.
I haven't had a problem taking mine off. I just cut my allen wrench, stick it into one of my socekts that fit; 10mm?, and used the 1/2" rachet with helper bar and cresent wrench with 3" dia pipe helper bar.

cam seal is behind the cam gear. The cam caps go on, then the seal is pressed in, then timing belt covers, and then cam gear.

If it makes you feel any better , I had to cut one of the bolts off when I rebuilt my motor! So they dont always come off easy ! Good luck though

impact wrench. because it dosent look like you can take them off with out getting those retainers off. or an air ratchet

I did some hunting on NASIOC last night and found this....

    http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=964052

The new plan is to use my old timing belt wrapped around the crank gear with some vice grips to keep the belt from slipping. Hopefully this works. I will let you know....

How necessary is it to put new cam shaft seals in when re-installing the cam shaft?

If you ever get to putting your camshaft caps on an ej205 engine READ THIS thread on NASIOC...

    http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1258930&highlight=camshaft+seal

The torque specs are incorrect in the service manual for the front caps that hold the camshaft seal in place. I snapped one of the bolts tonight putting my engine back together. Luckily I didn't twist it far enough for the bolt to seperate, I just carefully backed out the bolt to see it had bottle necked bad enough to break it easily in two with my fingers. I gor REALLy lucky.

The one you gave me doesn't work. I think it is eather specific to your 2.2 or 2.5 cooling system. First there is only one outlet, mine needs two, and the coolant inlet on the pump is mounted in front on mine and on the bottom for yours.

That normally works, but when some of the cam sprocket mounting bolts were put in but a fricken gorilla...

Well put it this way, I have seen the belt give way before the bolts come loose.
