So, I recently had the windshield replaced on my subaru, and low and behold i'm driving home from a cousin's graduation thingy tonight and some piece of **** van driven by some piece of **** person throws a ****ing rock into my month old windshield. Boom. big chip, spider cracks in all directions. Problem is, the cracks are smaller than the diameter of a dollar bill, and I'm worried that the insurance company is going to tell me to stuff it when I demand a new one be covered by my insurance. Now, I have USAA, and most people tell me they're so great for service members and veterans, etc, but those mother****ers SCREWED me when my Audi was totaled and I feel like they won't hesitate to screw me again. So, can I insist that they replace the windshield due to repair on the basis of diminished value or some other thing?
I thought only chips could be repaired and cracks would have to have the windshield replaced. I don't think insurance companies bitch too much about glass replacement. The bigger issue you are gonna have is rusting around the opening as I can guarantee you that the installer is gonna nick the paint somewhere under the window trim, but not covered by the adhesive/sealer. Good luck.
I can guarantee they will not. There was not a single knick anywhere after the first time. They are Realstreet's go to company for windscreens, and they have done glass on some very expensive machines.
I was asked it if was in my line of sight. I said yes, they replaced my whole windsheild. (AllState) I also had it replaced a few months later due to a crack which would have prevented a BIR track day. (Allstate)
when i had my windshield replaced last week, i was asked if the crack was bigger than a dollar bill, american family.
It is a dollar bill, that they go off of. However, I am sure if you wait a few days that will grow larger
A windshield claim is still a "claim" so having two claims in a short period of time will negatively affect your rating with them and other insurance companies. Depending on how your ins company treats windshield claims, it could be an easy fix or a premium nightmare for the next few years. Talk to your agent.
Windshield claims do not affect your insurance rates at all. Comprehensive claims in general do not as well
My experience says that this is not really correct. I had Allstate and after 5 replacements in the same year they jacked the rates on that vehicle. Insurance companies don't make money by paying claims. That being said 2 claims in a year likely should not be a problem, but I bet other claims on the policy might change how they look at it.
Well I am an Allstate agent, and there is an underlying reason for your rates going up, but I can tell you it wasn't from windshields
I found that when I had a windshield claim with Progressive, my rates were not affected and the claims person said it's fine to have one but said getting another windshield claim within a year or two can affect my premiums. My premiums at the time was $450 per 6 month term. What caught me off guard was that within that year, I shopped around for the cheapest insurance premium quote and the cheapest I found out of a handful of companies were $800 per 6 month term. That's a quote for a married 30 year old male with no speeding tickets or accidents. On that quote, I called and asked why. They said it was because I have a claim in my driving history. It doesn't show that it's for a windshield; it just shows in their system that a claim was made. So the lesson I learned is if you make windshield claims, don't plan on changing insurance companies.
Nevered had problems with windshield claims and rates never went up with the 4 years I'm with them. 4 windshield claims in one year. 2 on each car. All through Liberty Mutual. They rock. Had 3 chips on one windshield and they opt to change it out instead of filling in the chips. The others 3 were little cracks smaller than half a dallor on bottom of windshield. All was opt to replaced by insurance.
I cannot speak for every insurance company, but I know that I can see you glass/comprehensive claims from prvious companies, but they do not affect the rates at all. If they are showing a claim I would ask to see when and for what because typically that will not affect it. Again, I do not know about every company, but may actually be something you want to look at.
I never had problems with state farm in regards to windshield replacement affecting rates. I believe you can even get glass replaced if it's older and sand blasted pretty good where it is hard to see in direct sun. You can just mention it impedes ability to see properly and they sometimes will cover it. (depends on ins. company though) On my other car I did have to fight for a specific supplier of glass though. Not all glass is equal and my other car has a rain sensor that controls windshield wipers. Some of the cheaper glass available causes the sensor to function improperly. They were reluctant to replace with more expensive glass but luckily there was a production problem with their main supplier and they approved the more expensive glass.
Several years ago I was told by Progressive that the source of a particular rate increase was tied to my Comprehensive claims....which was 2 windshield claims. It was also noted in my bill in a less obvious manner. So....
This was also my experience. Years ago, someone smashed the windshield of my car while it was parked in a park and ride parking lot ... so I returned from work to find that damage. I had the free glass repair, so I called Allstate and they had it replaced. After that, my rates went up. When I called to ask why my rates increased when I was not even in the car when it was damaged, I was told that any claim raises your rate. So, I cancelled my insurance with Allstate and went with another company. I cannot speak for their current policies, but I can assure you that in 2008 Allstate would raise your rate for a glass claim. And there was no other underlying reason in my case .. that glass claim is the one and only time in my life I have ever made an insurance claim .. and I have never had a traffic ticket. In fact, when I called them about it, they flat out told me the glass claim was the reason for the increase.
