I just got done installing my 16g about 4 weeks ago. Since, I have gotten the tune worked on twice by DB performance and haven't really driven it all that hard. I was especially soft on it when I first installed it with the base map. Since I installed it though, the sound of the turbo has become worse and worse. What does a blown turbo sound like? What sounds should I be weary of? Boost still builds fine and the map I have right now limits it to only 18 psi. This is really not going to be cool if my turbo is shot already....
vrooom...woosh...squeel...vrooom...plah... plah... wooosh...shing..... vroom ha ha, I'm just kidding. I was trying to think last night how I could describe the sound, but that's impossible. I guess maybe I should just ask, "Can you tell when a turbo is going bad by the sound?" or will that be the first indicator that something is wrong?
Right when I very first put it on I noticed that it was more of a whining noise than the old turbo. That niose has just gotten worse and sort of pulses with the tone of the low exhaust. It's almost impossible to explain. Will anybody be at firestone very late thursday night?
If you want to swing by this weekend, I can check it out for you. But then you'll be forced to look at my golf clubs for sale, hehehe.
Good call, haha You have a point. Problem is that I am going to be out of town this weekend. You free tomorrow night at any time?
A bad turbo normally makes noise when boosting at very high RPM's (the turbine wheel anyway). As it spools up the noise may get worse. It sound's as you may have a boost leak instead of a bad turbo.
Is is constant, as in does it go away, get louder, get softer, as the car warms up?? Could be a uppipe leak. very common and could almost have the turbo whine of death sound. Russ
Not constant, only when the throttle is pressed a bit. That DP leak sounds pretty good because you can hear the sound before I get into positive boost. Therefore, that kind of eliminates a leak in the system after the turbo. I don't think you could make a leak noise there without having some boost pressure built up. Also, here is the golden ticket.... I don't have a nut on one of my DP studs. Ah, what a fool! Ya I know, but I had it that way on the old turbo and it didn't seem to make any problems at all. It is the nut toward the front of the car. That thing is HORRIBLE to put on. It got a little cross threaded a while back and there is no way I can get enough of a hold to fight the cross thread anymore. DP's are cheap... I have a gutted stocker right now. I never got an aftermarket one because I heard the gutted setup was just as good. Let's all cross our fingers that that is the problem because I have to drive to Platteville, WI tomorrow. :-(
One more post.... Now that the up-pipe thing sounds good to me, does anybody have one laying around that they are willing to sell? I don't think I would be interested in a stocker if I am going to pay money for it.
