When I purchaced my WRX back in June, I also purchaced a 3 yr/36k extended warranty through "Advantage" It was somwhere in the area of $1500. I called them and asked if I could cancel it, which I can, at this point with the miles I have on my car I would be looking at getting around $1000 credited to my loan on the car.

You guys think I should keep the warranty on the car or cancel it? I am very mechanically inclined if that makes a difference.

Im more worried about the engine/clutch/drivetrain going on me. I would assume the clutch would NOT be covered under this warranty?

    please shed a little light

    thanks!

If your engine is modded beyond some pipes, an intake and a bov, I would cancel it. If you have a bunch of mods, and you blow your engine, taking it in to them is pointless. You will end up paying for the repair. Same thing with the tranny. If you are modded, and you snap 2nd gear, you will pay for it. Might as well ditch the warranty and put the money off on the car.

I'm assuming any normal wear items IE clutch, brakes, etc would not be covered under any type of warranty.

I would check with the company and read the fine print when it comes to what they cover. I would only think that they would not cover any componets that would be affected by the perfromance mods, IE: you have perfromance exhaust and your mid pipe breaks, they would not cover it. If any of your mods contributed to the failure of a part or causes a problem, they would not cover it.

Agreed, but if it is engine (block, rods, crank, pistons, heads) or drivetrain (transmission, clutch) you wont get much service if your engine is modded. Engine mods lead to:

Engine wear and tear beyond what the manufacturer expects
Wear and shock-load to the transmission that is not in line with an engine making 165 wheel horsepower.

Look into it, but I can almost bet that the engine and tranny wont be covered under your warranty if you have:

    Uppipe
    Downpipe
    Any cats missing
    Intake
    Upgraded intercooler

for the resonator alone i would say no. but i guarantee if they see the resonator gone it will spark their interest and i'm sure they will be searching for mods more closely.

YOU know I am actully in the exact same boat as you..What I am going to do is have a full used car inspection done and some type of a disontastic also done to make sure everything is running well with no signs of potonitional Engine/tranny/drivtrain brake down then I am going to cancle it also...Because I will 100% start moding my car this summer, with unacceaptable mods.. ;)

Extended warranties are a waste of money in general IMHO, doubly so if you have ANY mods whatsoever. They are nearly pure profit for auto manufacturers. Cancel it and take the credit, use it for an emergency transmission/engine/etc fund if the worst does occur...which I would regard as extraordinary unlikely unless you have or get a crappy tune or drive like a butcher.

I Would keep it I have an advantage warranty that I bought through Morries. It has been really great. It has covered EVERYTHING from pulleys to head gasket replacement and everything in between. Granted it does not cover any normal maintenance items i.e. brkae pads/rotors or clutches. It's worth it to keep it for unexpected things. My head gasket was fine in the morning leaking in the afternoon. So to sum it up KEEP IT, IT'S WORTH IT. In my opinion.

I do drag race it from time to time. So not sure if it is worh keeping it.

I mean, if I break my tranny at the track do you think they will cover it?

I wouldn't call the extended warranty on my daily driving matrix a waste of money. It lasts until 100k miles and covers more than een the stock bumper to bumper did, enabling me to thrash on the car constantly and never really car what breaks. The only things it doesnt cover is the clutch (no warranty will). It even covers a limited amount of dents that I might get and things like wheel bearings that wear out on their own.

And for some reason, it covers timing belts too.

^^ i think the extended warranties are a great idea on a car that your are gonna leave stock. but for modding its just a waste of money.

any decent mechanic will figure that out... and then you will be blackflagged... and any damage done is usually able to be figured that it was caused by non-standard parts...

This is from a techs point of view, aftermarket warranties cover even less than what Subaru would cover.

Another Tech POV! A tech here's fiance had "Advantage" on her 02 2.5rs which had a bad case of the piston slap! Advantage said that an "out-of-round" cylinder...which is .006 out of round is normal wear and tear and therefore would not cover a short block for the car! That's Bullsh1t! Normal wear and tear would maybe be, and I mean maybe, at most .002! That's just one case of the rape parformed by aftermarket warranties!

Damn I hope I don't get .006 out of round on my 02. Yea I'd cancel it and if you plan on modding your car just keep a fund for "repairs" at all times.

You should probably ditch the extended warranty just because most warranty companies go belly up within a few years. There was a big Bahamas-based extended warranty company that went belly-up last year after collecting 2 billion in premiums. It had been around less than five years.

Unless the warranty is backed by the manufacturer, don't do it.
