I havent read it yet, but from previous history car and driver does not like subaru sto start with. They disliked all of the WRXs and the tribeca was "underpowered"

I don't think I'd say that at all. I do think the first gen Tribecas were a bit underpowered, especially compared to some of the competition. They were very big fans of the first WRXs to come over here, the WRX was on their 10 best list for a while and the Forester XT was on their 5 best list for trucks for a couple of years running. One such article:

    http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/3615/2001-bmw-330xi-v-subaru-wrx-v-audi-s4.html

I hate to say it, but I think I'll be looking for a used Impreza rather than one of the new ones.

Personally I have always read Motor Trend not a big fan of the boys over at Car and Driver, plus I'll let the seat of my pants be the judge not some paid critic. Who might I add is probably a little to used to driving his European ride to enjoy the Subaru ... end of rant!

Take the blinders off guys. No car company is the end all be all. Just because a car magazine isn't exactly glowing on their first drive of a new vehicle does not mean it's the end of the world. My biggest gripe would be the fact that the new car has gained weight over the previous model, while the WRX lost weight. I realize that extra diffs, 6 spd, Brembos etc all have their weight penalty, but to take a lighter body shell and still come out heavier makes me wonder. I am also curious to see just what to what degree the body roll has increased. I'll save my final judgement for later, but for right now I'm not sure if I like the direction that Subaru has taken with the Impreza. Trying to please too many people usually means they don't please anyone. I can see why they'd make the WRX more civilized, and I could understand retaining a Limited model STI version for those who want something a bit more civilized but I would've liked to have seen Subaru make the STI more of a stripped down, lighter weight model. It'll be interesting to see in the coming months just how well it's recieved.

Erik, I edited the post. I didn't mean it so much as a shot at you as just a general frustration with the board sometimes. While I love Subarus to death, I don't view them as the finest car company in the world. I think every car company has their good vehicles and bad vehicles. This is the first driving review I've seen (I subscribe to all 4 of the big mags) and I thought it was worth posting. I really don't like the fact that the car has gained weight, that's the last thing it needed to do. Getting up in arms about a bad review and going after the magazine isn't constructive or intelligent. They're writing it how they see it. This month in Car and Driver one of the comparison tests called the new WRX a budget BMW in a plain wrapper. I agree with that statement wholeheartedly. I just wish we had a little more Lotus and a little less BMW ;)

its kida neat that the car is actually 2" shorter than the current STI and the wheel base has been extended. also 245/40/R18s from the factory is good. but if it comes with 18s then the wheel arches must be cut like those on Zak's matrix. prepare for lots of dubs on Stis.

What are you talking about? C&D loves Subaru! They rate them highly in every comparo. Maybe not always the winner, but still at the top.

The Tribeca was underpowered with terrible gas mileage and an ugly front-end. And it was expensive. And it came with Subaru factory paint. That was not Subaru's finest hour...

However, ugly is in this year. :emo:

I guess I can eventually find away to live with the new design, but boy they really need to start giving the US of A some real seats here. Recaro seat's plz, my skinny bottom can use some more securing going around corners. My take from the article is that not much has changed mechanially, just a few additions and the obvious appearance. And if this is the case we're in a world of hurt'n. I just watched the new Best Motoriong featuring the Evo X and its does not have much body roll and when they compared it with the IX it was much more in control going around the salaom then into a carosel. Anyway I cant wait to see when BMI features them both side by side. I'm sure with enough critisiam Subaru will undergo some changes. I have heard from sources what the Tribeca resumbled and when the word got to the Subaru designers in Japan they were appauld and made the nessary changes. Thanks for posting this Brian.

Car and Driver, to the highest bidder

Car and Driver has always been biased to the larger car companies. Like someone said before, they didn't like the WRX when it first came out, but, if i remember correctly, a couple years later it was one of their 10 best. So dont be defeated yet, the numbers and specs i have been hearing have all been good.

You sure you're sobered up yet? Car and Driver loved the WRX when it came out, as well as the other magazines. It was on the 10 Best List in 2002 and 2003, the only appearances on the list for the car (go Bugeyes ;) ). Their only complaints were common ones, mostly related to interior noise and harshness and crappy all season tires. Valid complaints. My complaints (and the ones voiced in the article) are mostly related to the "softening" and the weight gain. While I'm not saying it'll be a bad car (and neither is the article) I don't know that it's the right direction to move for the STI.

^ I believe it was a 2005 10 best, at least that what I remember from the sign I see every time I get parts at Morries.

In the two previous comparos, the WRX got beat by the Mazdaspeed 3 and the RSX-S, respectively. It got beaned for crappy all season tires and the turbo lag. And stock turbo lag is FTL.

I remember when I first got my car I feared for my life. I'd pull in to traffic and cringe. Stage 1 fixed that. WOTVS Stage 2 made life even better. ECU flashing FTW!
