I'm curious to know what peoples opinions are in a comparison of a

    05 STi Stock
    300hp

    vs

    01 BMW - M5 Stock.
    400hp

I think both are relatively the same price.

you are comparing two completly diffrent breeds of cars, you are also comparing a brand new car to a 5 yr old used car. imo i would rather have the reliabilty of a new car w/ or w/out a warranty. You also have to look at RWD only vs. AWD and winter driving. I think on this board you are going to get more people like myself that are going to reccomend the STi

    STi

    - AWD
-Not German = easy to work on & cheaper to fix
    - 6spd w/ DCCD
    -Boxer rumble
    -Big Wing
    -Hood Scoop
    -Recaro seats
    -Rally proven

i might be kinda biased hehe

oh i didn't expect to get a lot of people to vote for the M5. i just wanted to see the thoughts. It's the closest Subaru to compare to it.

my friend has the M5 that he wants to sell. I know he said mid 30's for it.
you interested? I could let him know.

I love his car. I think its awesome, it's a dark red - i've never seen the color before. But I was just asking what features make the STi better.

    Thanks guys.

I don't think you can really compare the two. They are completely different except both have 4 doors. AWD Turbo and Rear Drive N/A will get you completely different characteristics. Also BMW and Subaru have very different interior workmanship. M5 is a high end business car which will probably kill you on the ins but I highly doubt that being out of warranty is an issue. It's a really well built engine and tranny.

If you can afford the repairs/maintenence/insurance, go M5.

I would kill anyone here for an M5. Alright, I wouldn't go that far, but they're still great cars. Yes, the idea of all those electronics out of warranty does scare me, but the combination of the speed, comfort and stealth factor to the ordinary person to me is a great combination. The M series cars truly are a drivers car. As far as winter goes, they do have a decent traction control setup. While it won't be anything like a Subaru, it won't be the worst thing either, especially with the 50/50 weight distribution. Good snow tires would help that along. While it isn't an apples to apples comparision, I still would love the M5.

    2006 BMW 330i
    MSRP: $36,600

    2006 BMW 525i
    MSRP: $42,500

    2006 BMW 525xi

    2006 BMW 530i
    MSRP: $46,800

    2006 BMW 530xi

^2001 M5, not a new one...Depending on Miles i.e. 50-55k I'd say 35k is on the high side Maybe 32k...I'd say trade-in is somewhere around 25-26k tops...That is just my guess...

I had no idea they went that cheap now. Too bad the maintenance costs are nightmarish.

There is a Dinan M3 in my building that is straddling the line between awesome and euro rice (I call it risotto) and I occasionally lust after it.

imo only italian cars can be risotto....
the dinan would classify as straight up carnaroli.

It shows some true Subie brain-wash for anyone to pick the STI over the M5. Although the STI is bad A@@, the M5 is a gift from our German gods.

I would really love to have one of the M5 wagons they made for one of the BMW execs. IIRC there were two or three made. Talk about the ultimate sleeper. I wouldn't mind finding a 540i six speed wagon, too bad they're almost as rare as the aforementioned M5...

I had a great deal lined up on a silver with black leather 01 540i but I still bought the STI instead. I know an M5 is more pimp than a 540i but they both have the v8 with a 6 speed. BMW has leather and moonroof and an overall nicer interior. The bmw stereos are poop tho - even worse than subaru. What sold me on the sti was the awd and the WARRANTY. Not that I will have a warranty for much longer. Maintenance on BMW's is huge bucks - even more than the STI(sti 30k was almost 600). My parents both had BMW's growing up so I can tell you firsthand the maintenance on any BMW v8 or v12 is going to be a nightmare. STI FTW...altho the BMW is still a pretty sweet machine especially a 2001 which is before all the i-drive bs.

I'd vouch for the M5 if the cost of ownership didn't cost me an arm and a leg. Then again, if you can afford a BMW, you shouldn't complain about the cost of maintenance. I know because I've own German cars before.

To each their own, I wouldn't mind owning another German car. I'm well prepared to cough up more dough for repair then I was when in High School.

As far as comparison goes between the M5 and STi... they are two totally different beast... do you want sport cruiser with luxury (M5) or do you want pure all out fun car (STi)?

I would never drive an M that was AWD. Part of the fun of an M (3 or 5 variety, or any BMW for that matter) is the RWD and their ability to break them loose (when traction control is turned off)

We were at that ride and drive thing for the Legacy when it came out. Compared it against the 325i. The TC couldn't be turned off on that model. It wanted so badly to snap out the backside and OMG DORIFTO, but then the TC would cut power to the rear wheels till traction was restored. Totally ruiined that car for me. Even the guy that rode along with us was like, "That is why I HATE this car." I hit that course with the sole purpose of drifting that BMW around the third turn and into the 4th, and it let me down. :(

I was cruising through the back lot at Motorwerks a year back or so and noticed a dark grey wagon with what looked to be an M5 front facia. I jumped out of the subaru to check it out and was surprised to see it had an M5 badge on the back and the quad exhaust. I pulled around front and went in to talk to a couple of the sales guys that I know. They confirmed the fact that it was an actual M5 wagon that some guy down in Iowa (IIRC) had bought off the grey market a couple years back. Either he got shamboozled and continues to perpetuate the lie, or he has the coolest wagon ever. I love my subaru and all, but I would probably trade my left teste for a blown E39 M5. 620 hp and 500 lb/ft in a package that most people wouldn't even look twice at. F'n awesome.

You could also put 79k in a subaru justy, but to each his own...

For example, correct me if I'm wrong, but I would think that you can get a WRX to out perform an STI with about 5k of mods tucked into it.

A used M5 with 50k miles is kbb private party valued at $39k in "good" condition.

I LOVE the M5 but I would get nervous about the cost of maint., but if you found a good indie maybe it would work out.

I love the sleeper look and the interiors are fabulous. Both cars command a "nod" from car enthusiats.

I would likely do an STI, unless I traveled with others frequently, or had to pick up clients.
