I was reading the "how to drive in snow thread" and noticed something is missing. Being prepared for what might happen if you DO crash.

Have a winter kit in your car. This for me, Includes:

    Small blanket
GlovesSimple tool kit (plyers, phillips and flathead screw driver, a few sockets)
Couple granola bars and a bottle of water.
    Flares
    Collapsable shovel
Ice scraperWd-40, (originally developed as airplane wing de-icer, works great for keeping stuff out of wheels)
    Map
    Good Flashlight
30' 10,000lb tow strap never needed myself, but pulled out others.
    pen and paper
Old cell phone They will dial 911 even without a service plan.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some things, feel free to add in whatever you keep in your car.

EDIT: adding items posted by members

Heat source candle, lighter, butane torch...
    Pocket knife/Leatherman
Pencil works in place of pen if ink frozen
    Jumper Cables
    Winter hat
    Waterproof bag
    Wool Socks
    Money
    Tire repair kit
Portable floor jack Honestly never heard of these before...
Extra fluids coolant, windsheild washer fluid, oil, etc.
    Charcoal handwarmers
First Aid Kit I feel stupid for forgetting that on my list...
    Jagermeister/Jack Daniels

Lets keep this list going! It will allow people to make a bit of a checklist to help them pick what they would like to put in their kit. Everyone's kit will differ depending on the roads, fellow motorists, temperature, etc.

Candles, work for light and heat. And to defrost that bottle of water that froze.

A good sized pocket knife is also good to carry.

I'd suggest a pencil as well as a pen. After an accident in the winter I had to write some information down and both of us had trouble finding a pen in our cars that would work in the cold. Now I carry a carpenter's pencil (from menards) sharpened on both ends, always works.

Portable floor jack works great too, scissor jacks suck. Extra thick socks is a great idea... standing in the snow if you are stuck can get very cold on the feet. Don't forget to bring extra coolant around with you in the winter as well as extra washer fluid.

Those activated charcoal hand/foot warmers are definitely a good thing to have with also. And a big pair of mittens (not gloves) are nice, sleeping bag... The list can go on and on. Best winter survival item is definitely a cell phone with charger tho.
