i was just on my way home so the car was a little cold and i was going in 3rd gear when i gave it a little gas, just enough so the turbo would kick in. it went with an urge of boost and than lagged for a second than went agian for about three seconds, and all of a suddon shut off. i lost all my power stearing, brakes, and all the CEL came on. i had to turn hard to get out off the road and used the E-brake to slow down. than i turned the car off and wated for a second or two in confusion, than turned it back on and drove home....... what has happened? it was really scary. and i dont know what caused it. if you have some answers for me that would be awsome thanks.
The same thing happened twice with a guy's Forester XT. Not even the dealership could explain it or duplicate it, so after a while, he sold it.
does the car have electronics starting? i know someone (not a suby) but the auto start kicked in on the hoghway and killed the car. had to coast to the shoulder ect... just an idea.
i had a jeep that had the same problem sometimes. turned out to be the fuel filter. has it been changed recently?
in my legacy, at -10, with no fuel , It would idle fine, but once I hit the fuel................. it would die. (I've ran my tank empty many times, but when it's cold out , and less then 1/24 of a tank.......) water in the fuel pump?
Is the alternator its trying to take the juiced from your battery. Once your alternator is dead, you technically run the battery without the alternator. That happen the same thing when my girl had the chevy beretta. You might check the alternator voltage. Good luck
thanks guys for the advice, i think i will take it into the dealer and see if they can find any thing.
samething happen to me twice but realize that i forgot to turn the key over and my turbo timer was shutting down while i was driving...very embrassing
Woah! I just experienced this problem two days ago, and it was very scary. I thought about it for awhile and there is only two things that could cause this. Malfunctioning alternator or water in the gas line somewhere. I was crusing at highway speed, with the cruise control on and all of a sudden I had a loss of power, then boost, then loss then boost, then loss and finally the engine stalled. I coasted to the nearest exit ramp and then attempted to start it, and bang! It started right up as if there was no problem at all! I had my foot away from the pedals and when the car was stalling, the clutch was engaged so that should have kept the engine running, but it didn't! The key was in the correct position in the ignition and nothing appeared to be wrong. I looked under the hood when I pulled off and found nothing to be wrong. Temp was fine, oil was fine, I had plenty of fuel, and like I said, it started after a minute of sitting there with no hesitation as if nothing was wrong. I was in the middle of Nebraska in the middle of the night with no gas station or sign of civilization nearby. Thankfully I had a flash light, not that it helped in the end, but yes, it was very scary. Any word to what went wrong? I have 80k miles and no power mods. ~Dan
Who I mentioned earlier was Josefoods who has an 04 Forester XT with the same symptoms. Morries Minnetonka just found that it was a small banjo bolt that was causing a rough idle and choking of the engine. Although it only goes for 04 2.5L turbos motors, it could also be for earlier years. This banjo bolt wan't corrected by subaru until 2005. This is the link: http://www.subaruforester.com/viewtopic.php?t=16359&highlight= This is what Peaty from Scoobymods did to fix it: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?p=20301#post20301 Try it and see if it comes back.
same exact thing happened. dont know what it was? luckly i was on a side street. sucks that you were on a highway, that must have been really scary.
...except it's no the banjo bolt. It's the filter for the variable valve timing oil passageway. When it gets restricted...uh oh timing goes retarded!! That doesn't cause the car to die though, just very slow and doggy!
^^I'm assuming you know a little about this customer's car. Yeah, I meant the tiny filter in the banjo bolt. Josefoods' car occasionally died while cruising on the freeway before this major/minor problem occured. I thought it could have been related.
