anyone on here done a carputer? How easy was the install and how does it fare in the winter? I have an old laptop lying around and was thinking about replacing my stock wrx stereo with a touchscreen for the laptop.
We built one for project sti... I'll have to look on the camera to see if we have any pics. Its basically the via sp8000 fanless board, 120gb sata drive, 1gb ram... using it for GPS, the hydra, mp3s, movies... etc. We got a touch screen monitor for it at mp3car.com and some custom mounting of the components so everything is behind the screen.
Yes, I'm running a P4 2.8GHz, 512MB Ram, 120 gig HDD, Dual head video card, with dual indash touchscreens, GPS, WiFi, EDGE/GPRS cell internet, etc... http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=817066&highlight=carputer+fxt Theres a link to my thread on NASIOC. It's far from the cleanest install ever, but that will be getting fixed up soon. My only problem in the winter is that my HDD runs fluid filled bearings, so when it get really cold out for a while the HDD doesn't spin up, it has to warm up for about 10-15 minutes, but I park indoors at home and work so it's not a huge deal. feel free to PM me if you want advise, or help. Matthew
i am also running a carputer setup and i love it, it does everything i really need it to like techy said. gps, mp3's, dvd, video files, wifi. built mine nice and cheap, the trick is to find people selling used stuff try www.mp3car.com i had a lot of sucess finding parts on there. Just remeber to get parts that take as little power as possible you will need to get a dc power supply for it and they only come in limited supplies as far as power goes.
man, i've always been interested in one of these. How much would it cost to get the bare essentials such as a touchscreen, computer etc. Just enough to run DVD's, UTEC, MP3s?
I have been thinking about this too. Anyone have, used, or seen this screen? http://www.autonode.com/xdpi107b.html This is about as cheap as I can find here in the US. Otherwise have to get them from Hong Kong but that scares me a bit.
If you guys plan on installing the touchscreen into your double din slot i would reccomend a liliput screen they can be had for around 200-250 somtimes cheaper if you look in the right places at the right times. I built my setup myself and it ran me around $700. Here is myset up you can kind of find prices for used stuff if you want to go off what i have i guidance (aka iNAV) (http://www.inavcorp.com/) Rikaline GPS 6010 X5 Mouse GPS Receiver (http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/rikaline-gps-6010-x5.php) Liliput 7" screen With Custom double Din Bracket. His prices are a little high on some stuff, but i think he will price match and his knowledge is very helpfull in the whole process. If any of you want me to build you a system, or install one or help you in the process let me know, i have built many computers and done many car audo installs, including my own car pc install.
besides the laptop, touchscreen, and power supply, what else would i need? I'm not looking for a gaming rig; only enough to play music and video for my kid. and maybe that ecu explorer Are any of you guys still running a stereo setup with your carputers? or are there good pc radio progs?
I run an alpine 9855 with my crputer. There are radio progs, but the hrdware is not up to par with the tuners in headunits. If you're using a laptop you won't need a psu, but you will need an inverter, or 12v adapter for your laptop, and some form of startup/shutdown controller. Probably one using the acc line and a serial port. (You won't be able to use a hardware one like thr ITPS because they are designed to hookup to the pwrsw headers on a mobo. Dig through the newbie and faq sections on mp3car for info.
before getting into it, would highly reccomend looking at other impreza installs on mp3car.com just search for subaru installs on there you will find about 2 dozen, then you can get an idea of whats involved.
