yep they are at it again and now they are in St Louis park. They sawed off a cat on my neighbors van. Whats really sucks that they paid some shop over a grand to put a new one in. I was like i would have done it for you for 500:). But it was too late. The car is 90th astrovan. My fiancee is getting all pissed off at me now that there is no space for her car in the garage.

So this is just a heads up for everyone that lives in the area around lake calhoun and st lous park.

Older cars are targets, because the older cats have more precious metals. Bigger vehicles are targets due to the ease of sliding under them to make the cuts. Old and big makes for a prime target. Honestly, I'm kinda surprised nobody has gone after my old truck. Heck, I've thought about spending $50 on a new cat and chopping the old one off and recycling it for 3 times that.

$50 is VERY cheap for a decent quality cat. I would be surprised if it even worked, not that it matters on an older vehicle.

meh, i don't even care anymore. but I'll fix it.

Note to everyone else: if you see a spelling error, ignore it, I will probably fix it. You don't need to call everyone out for it

You are wrong, you don't need to capitalize the letter after a :
that doesn't make any sense at all if you do.

And grammatical errors != spelling errors. I care less about grammatical errors than spelling errors :)

And my point stands. People don't need to be called out for it. I'm the biggest spelling Nazi on the site, and you don't see me behaving that way in every thread where there's an error in the title.

Everyone bitches about these and other scrap value related crimes.
You want to end this, demand laws that require that scrap yards verify the origin of all scrap they purchase. Make failure to do this a felony.
This **** is easy. No one has 50 catilytic converters to scrap unless they're a thief or a garage. Similarly, no one has 100 telephone junction boxes unless they stole them or they're qwest. Yet somehow this **** keeps going on.
Scrap yards don't give a**** if this stuff is stolen and there's baiscally no consquences. Even if they were simply held to the level of pawn shops (which is very low), we'd all be better off.

Dealerships were big targets for this about a year ago. We at Lexus had to put about 30K worth of exhausts on RX350s a while ago. That was one hell of an insurance claim. These were all NEW cars. Since then, junkyards are at least required to make sure that the scrap pieces are at least USED looking. Now it seems that thieves have moved elsewhere.

I have heard that some cat recyclers are now taking pictures of people who bring in more than 2 at a time.

the only thing that makes me feel a little better is that the car is new and pollutes much less than older cars WITH cats. On my miata i am getting a new cat not just replacing it with a test pipe. And i was thinking about adding a high flow cat to my exhaust.

A really basic, spun "bullet" style cat can be had for about $47 shipped with a ceramic core. EPA legal, etc. Probably not CARB certified though. You need to add your own flanges, etc, but I'm always looking for excuses to fire up the welder ;)

I'm actually going to add a cat to my exhaust. Not just any cat though. Metal substrate cats have come WAY down in price and restrict the exhaust a fraction of what ceramic substrate cats do. $120 is a small price to pay to do my part in saving the world.

Cats are a federal requirement. As in 50 state required.

    And, no, no testing.

Only some. Too many (ones the cat thieves know about) don't care, esp if they're paying much less than the scrap value.
