I will be using the car on weekends and track events and whenever I want during the summer.

I will keep the stock EG33 engine rated at 230HP and around 200 ft/lbs(?) torque.

    EDIT:

I am going to go with a 5MT.

What are good and what are bad gear ratios and final drive ratios?

    Case flex or DCCD?

Just FYI, that continues to be the subject of debate amongst armchair experts everywhere. Read some of Unabomber's posts on NASIOC for more. I think it's far from being established as fact.

i think you can get the STi tranny swap (wiring, tranny, drivfeshaft, rearend, knucles, hubs, brakes) for 5-7k.

the 6spd is way strongger then the 5spd. however i have head there are some odd things with wiring the DCCD into the car. things like inorder to use the full auto mode you need to wire in teh STi abs untis and other things.

for 230 hp you shoul dbe fine w/ the 5spd, but if you plan on geting some more hp, might as well start with something alitte better, like a 5spd w/ RA gears (harder gear set = less breakage) or a 6spd non dccd form a jdm car.

this is just some generic info i have picked up, i will try to do some research on the subject.

    Thanks.

I am most likely going to get the WRX tranny maybe with the RA gear set.

Eventually I'm going to be moving to the Buy-sell thread, I just need to know what I should be looking to buy.

WRX tranny or L tranny with 3.900 final drive is fine. Remember that the WRX tranny (if you're lookin at the USDM 02-05) then it's a totally different setup. It has the 1.1:1 steup up transfer gear.

The 96-01 Impreza L and 98-01 2.5RS have the same gearing but different final drive. The 97-99 Legacy Outback has the shorter fifth gear but same 1-4th gear as the 96-01 Impreza & 98-01 2.5RS.

You can put in the RA gears into the L or 2.5RS tranny as well. the L tranny will have a 3.900 final drive, the 2.5RS will have the 4.111.

I guess I have a rear LSD that fits the 3.9 final drive trannys.

I thought the WRX tranny was a 1:1 not 1.1:1. BTW what does that mean?

It's the transfer gear, where it splits from to rear from the center diff. The older WRX (1st generations) has the 1:1 transfer gear. The USDM WRX has this 1.1:1 transfer gear for whatever reason...ahha

As long as the it's a R160 and with the right axles, then it's fine. You can put it all together and just have a shop reshim it to specs, save ya a lot of labor $$.

PPG gearset. Straight-cut 1-4 w/ synchro engagement. Or dogbox version if you don't have a wife ;), and billet selector forks
