I was just wondering what ya'll thought about changing to synthetic oil at 68000 miles. Is it good, bad, doesnt matter...? It should've been done earlier, but i'm the second owner, so just wondering what you guys thought. I've read enough on when you're supposed to change to syn and breaking the car in and all that jazz. But never really heard of anyone changing over in higher miles. Info much appreciated, thanks :)

Well I know of 5 vehicals that changed to amsoil at over 100k miles. None of them had any problems after switching, one actually started to leak/burn less oil. I say go for it. 68k is not that many miles when you look at the grand sceem of things.

I just recently switched to Mobil 1 full synthetic at about 94k miles on my '99 L wagon. I drive it hard so I figure I might as well put these in. hahaha
Next I'm going with that 15k mile stuff from Mobil.

What isn't already leaking, wont start because you changed to synthetic oil. The only real major difference is that synthetic has better lube properties, for a longer period of time, and with higher heat resistance. Also has better cold starting characteristics. uno uno uno!!!111

According to this page http://www.quakerstate.com/pages/carcare/whattoknow.asp , switching back and forth, mixing them together, etc, is fine.

Personally, *I* wouldn't do the conv->syn switch on an old car.
Conventional oil leaves a bit of varnishy residue, which isn't inherently harmful but does build up over time.
Synthetic oil is (generally) detergent-based. That stuff is fine when it's keeping your engine clean from the start, but if you do a switchover, there's years of extra yuck to clean off.

Knowing that, you might want to do your first syn->syn oil change "sooner than normal" after your first conv->syn oil change.

But, of course, if your engine is nice and clean inside and you've been doing pre-3K oil changes for its whole life, then it'll be no big deal.

I wouldnt know, i crashed the car.... :p but on the bottle of mobil they say that it will not cause leaks and are seal safe even if you're switching over....so who knows, so far so good until the car crashed....

According to some oil reps I talked too, switching to full synthetic at any mileage is fine. Alternating between types of oils won't hurt your motor, but pointless since you'd lose the advantages of using full synthetic oil.

I didn't figure it was a bad idea. A lot of pros on the Synthethic side. Just wanted to hear someone that had done it with a bunch of miles on their car. It seems everyone bought their car new and did the systematic 1000M break-in, and then changed it over. Or waited to 3 or 10k Miles. I only have 66k on it right now, but by the time I need a change it'll be 68k. Thanks for the info. M1, here I come :)

I changed to Synthetic at 1K miles. I put alot of miles on my car so I wanted to do it sooner than later. So far it's been running great.

well, with the 15k oil, you'll just need to change the filter every 5K...saving you money on the oil and just replacing the filter and top off what ever was lost during the change.

hmmmm ok.. so all the gunk in your engine though some is caught in the filter it still circulates through the galleries etc...

come ona man you work at Jiffy... should nt you be recommending a total flush with coolant flush and tranny flush and differential drop and drain and whatever else you can upsell.... just kidding with ya man.... after your ealrier post abotu jiffy lubes...

yeah well you can do that with the oil if you guys want.. but for the sake of $20 in oil I aint risking a $5000+ engine cause I am cheap.... I am gonna push it out to 5000miles tops but thats only if I aint been abusing my ride..
