Sorry, I haven't done this yet in either my old wrx wagon or my current 05 STi, hence the question. In researching the trans fluid change for the STi, I'm finding that people are draining from two spots for the trans fluid (one near clutch and the other being the trans drain plug). Do both need to be drained, or can fluid be drained from the trans drain plug only? I take it I should also change out the crush washers when I change out fluids as well?

I understand the process to fill the trans fluid back up, so no need to get into that.

    Thanks,

    Mike

You would need to drain both of them. The one in the pan drains the gearset/center diff. the other drains the front diff section. I would be very careful of what fluid you use in your STi. There have been many syncro failures due to the wrong oil.

Subaru type s fluid is automatic tranny fluid.

Don't you have trouble shifting into 5th? What oil are you running?

To the OP I would only use subaru tranny fluid. I don't have the part number here with me so you will have to search it out.

I purchased the redline 75w90ns...which I've heard good things about from others. If anyone can bash this fluid...please do so before I go ahead and use it.

And people wonder why they have issues with syncros in there 6MT after getting it changed at the dealership [cough friction modifiers]. I would assume a new parts guy would make a check before making a statement like that.

I will have to check the barrel I have for the SOA part number.

subaru approves the valvoline we put in the vehicles, they get grinds when they use SYNTHETIC. thats why we wont use syn in any 5mt or 6mt, im sure we SHOULD be using the subaru oil, but you know how things like that go with big oil suppliers and trying to get us deals on oil and whatnot in bulk. subaru wouldnt allow us to use it if it was hurting thier vehicles. i dont know of any vehicles that have come back for grinds after us changing the fluid.

That is the last and the BEST of the aftermarket I have used in a 6MT. I am now of the belief that the best thing to do is to get the subaru oil as tranny repairs are too costly. There must be a reason that subaru sells that oil as well as rear diff (front/rear on a 4/5EAT) oil.

Subaru Automatic Fliud isn't "Type S"....it's actually called Idemitsu ATF-HP. I don't know where the S came from, but that's not a Subaru Automatic fluid. The ATF-HP is what gets run in the 5EAT trannys, and can be run in the 4EAT just as well. Run any other in the 5EAT, and your asking for failures.

As for the STi, just run a regular (read: Non-Synthetic) 75w fluid (75w90 works too). Valvoline is just fine, and that's what we use...which is approved by Subaru.

So you feel the OEM Subaru is even better? If so I may have to try it. That amsoil feels like butter though, but that may be due to the fact I drove a 5 speed for eight years.

I also heard nothing but good things on the AMSOIL but can't decide between the OEM Subaru or AMSOIL.
