Doesn't v-bulletin have a chat feature? Maybe that could help cut down on the BS.

yeah, I'm sure there's some chat features that can be added. with the club meetings going on this summer though I don't know who would have time to set it up and maintain it.

Maybe someone can setup an #MNSubaru irc channel and we can see how much it gets used.

I just say it since fivezeroseven.com has a chat feature through the site and it V-bulletin. It would be good for the "chatty" people on here.

t3hw00t had two different chat systems. FlashChat, which is process heavy, especially when 15+ people log on. But it does tie into the site's database, so there is authentication and admin/mod rights are maintained in the chat.

Another chat program we have is ChatAnGo, it can be found on the front page of the site, and it is more of a shoutbox than a chat room, but it does function as a chat room if you want it to. It can be scaled to whatever size you want, and it isn't hosted locally, so no worries. Only problem is, anyone can join it. So there is no stopping banned members from chatting and no moderation.

IRC is nice, but it helps to have a web based client for it, because not everyone is good at running MIRC or whatever clients are out there. Too much room for error. I had a web based client that I had hacked, it was java and could be embedded easily in HTML. I'd have to look around for that. I think we still have one on one of the backups of the site, so I could just copy it that way and send it to you. You'd need to setup an IRC channel somewhere and point the java client to it in the scripts, but it worked fine for what it was.

i can set up a mnsubaru irc channel on efnet and let it sit there forever .. until it gets used.

and if you use it, you must use EFNET not ****in dalnet or some other crap net. EFnet is the only one that has been around since irc inception and doesn't disconnect you every ****in day.

and jason, any idiot can use mirc ... you have no idea. I've been doing irc for 10 years and more. TRUST ME .. if you can use a forum, you can use mirc.

Ya, fivezeroseven uses flashchat. Its a pretty slow forum, so there's probably never more than 4-5 people using the chat. There's only about a third of the people and activity as there is here.

I just though it was a cool idea and could maybe give people a place to BS, instead of in threads where there are two pages of half-sentence posts.

What do you mean by process heavy exactly? I'm not that familiar with web geekdom. Would we need upgrades for such a thing?

Time to flex my true nerd powahaahahaz...

I've been on irc for a long ass time ('96 represent). Some of my friends got sick and tired of the bulls**t on efnet/dalnet/your crappynet so we created our own irc network with our own crap. Splits almost never happen (maybe once every 6 months) and oh yeah, WE OWN IT. So any crap that happens gets taken care of quickly. There is no chan takeover or any of that crap.

So what's the name of this wonderful network? penguinpowered.ca

Yes, we do already have web-based irc clients made. check out http://irc1.penguinpowered.ca

Put in your name and for channal put in #mnsubaru

For you mirc/etc users, we have servers irc1, irc2 and irc3.penguinpowered.ca

I just run on irc1. I think 3 might be down right now, but i'm not positive on that.

I already have the chan reg'd and up. I'm sitting in there as "crack", my el33t haxorz alias. I'm gonna be gone this weekend, but i'll just be in there lurking as always.

^^^ I concur. Just use the regular ones that are available so that the webmasters here don't have to do something special, how much more bandwidth will that use up?

IRC uses zero bandwidth from MNSubaru and costs them nothing.

Well, first off, chat will not happen on vbulletin any time soon. There is a new version coming out in a few months. I have installed the newest beta version and alot of things will be changing from what we have now, so there is no point in trying to install a chat, when in a couple of months it will not work with the new vbulletin. The new version on vbulletin will have some person to person chats, but not to sure about a "open" chat forum.

As for system resources, a process heavy system is not what we want. That is the issue that we almost have now. That is why dream host will not touch this site. Basically that is the cpu error that pops up every once in a while. Basically we only get so much cpu time per minute/hour, and if we go over that, it gives us that error. We are already on blue hosts highest cpu time account and the next step up from that will be vps. Bandwidth and storage is not even remotely a problem. IIRC we have 15tb of bandwidth and 1.5tb of storage, and we use next to nothing on those. We would just need more cpu time, and cpu time costs money.

Nice bandwidth! ^ Makes it easier to understand why there are errors sometimes, CPU related.

we need to make offtopic a link to a chatroom. its just too distracting lol, maybe have like a little box in the corner so you can surf the tech section and still see what the clowns are talking about.... just an idea.

Yes, the shoutbox is a good idea. We (my friend and I) use it at our forum and helps keep alot of the bs in there and out of the forum.

I'll make a post later on what the hell irc is and how to use it for the noobs. Some mod can then sticky it. I'll include pictures for the people who don't read good :)
