So here i am driving my car yesterday and i took off from couple stops and then when i was going down the freeway i though i heard a horrible sound reved the engine and oh yes it was a horrible sound. So i pull up to a Wendy's pop the hood and listen to the soudn it is QUITE the sound soudns liek vavle slaping around in the car well i give it a few revs see if it follows it all teh way through and it does. Then the P0340 CEL comes. Seems a bit odd so i leave there and it hits me i wonder what my oil situation is like... I pull over to a SA on teh way to drop it off at teh bloomington Acura subaru and not much oil was left at all. Wodnering if that is my case funny part is only been 4k miles on synthetic so i can't imagine why it's all burned off never seen any oil in my garage floor or smell of burning oil. So i get a couple of quarts of 5w30 put it in no diffrence well maybe a little not much to notice. So I get back inteh car and drive it to "ABS" and on the way there noise quits whn i am aroudn 2.7k rpms with about 7lbs of boost but then comes back again... when i let off the accelator. vavle starts slapping around again or somethign is at very rapid speed but when i accelrate again noise decreases in speed. So i drop the car off at ABS and will have to wait till monday till someone can even listen to it.

So what are your thoughts think this might be covered under extended warranty? If not how much will this cost me out of pocket if not. Any ideas what the root cause of the problem could be?

Any help on this would be gratly apreacted.

its probably because of how low on oil it was. driving around without enough oil killed your bearings/ect, sorry to say it, but you probably bought yourself a new engine, just ask fuji what happens when you dont check your oil.

Figured i woudl post an update tehy are teling me that i over reved the car i guess i reved it to redline? Does this qualify for over revving? Seems a bit within the tollerance and not like It was staying there for more tehn a second or 2 at the most. Regardless it through a bearing and now requires a new short block is this worth it jsut get an engine swap?

well if the dealer is going to fix it i would let them fix it. If you are paying for it then i would look into a swap

There is a revlimiter. And a redline. If they wanted you to not go to 7000 rpms, then they should have made redline 6500 and set the rev-limiter as such.

With that said, once Subaru denies warranty coverage of your motor, your options are wide open. Any EJ series motor will fit in your car, so it is a matter of which one. Used and running EJ20's can be found on eBay all the time for pretty cheap, as well as on Nasioc. And EJ257's are becoming quite common too. Might cost a bit more, but here's the thing...you probably only need a new shortblock. As long as your heads are still in good condition, all you'd probably need is a gasket set and a new shortblock.

If you are interested in building a block, I have an EJ257 that I'm trying to get rid of that needs some work, an overbore and a new set of pistons will get you where you want to be for less than the price of a new shortblock. And there are plenty of other "TLC Needed" blocks floating around Nasioc as well.

    Lots of options.

Thanks for all the help! I will update post tomorrow with what they are saying as for warranty work. I Could not agree more on teh rev limiter. Thanks also for your sugestion on maybe how to proceed all of the suggestions sound pretty good to me. I got POS right now, but it works so as long as i can keep that running i'm good to go.

I'm sorry to hear of your misfortune. I hope the best comes out of your experience.

Oil goes down as you drive: not by much but it goes away as mileage goes up from your last oil change/check. The crank case has been known to pull oil into the intake piping ---> intercooler in some WRXs/STis. If you can pull off your intercooler and check to see if there's a pool of oil in it, that's something that you can use for your defense. Get ready though; they will say that it's your responsibility to check your own oil level and you'll suck up some of the costs (if they agree to pay part of the job).

Well soudns like a new block / complete engine is order after the disucssion i jsut had. So before i pack up my toys and go home I would like to know if there is 1. anyone either with knowedlge of replacing a short block. 2. Can assist in such a thing in any mean s possible (cash will probably be involved). 3. Knows of cheaper shop that may be able to get this done wahtever route (full engine swap, short block upgradeor swap, etc). 3. I have months of time if this is what it takes. I have POS car right now which works goes from point A to B and back to A so as long as it keeps running I am good with that.

    Thanks for any reponses...

OKay well i just got off the phone and everyone was pretty right nope not covered. So... Now what is the question. 3.3k in parts what would be the best option. Never got much of answer back on what would be needed for EJ257 upgrade.
