Well my car needs a new clutch. Sweet..... I am actully pissed. Well I was woundering what kind of power a stock clutch can handle. Also does anyone have any other clutches they like. I have to drive the car every day so I dont want a clutch thats going to shake off every stop. Also I dont like centerforce clutches. My car is an 02 WRX. Thanks guys.
I have the Spec stage 3+ and I love it. Very drivable, doesnt bite too hard and its not a twin plate so it doesnt rattle at stops. It's rated at 450tq so I think you could get away with a stage 1 or 2. Got mine here, http://www.horsepowerfreak.com/
I was leaning towards spec. I have always liked there clutches. Does anyone know how much a stock clutch can take? Just curious cause I can get a stock one for 200 bucks. But I might have to just pony up and buy the spec stage one.
Dream, How would you compare the feel of a stock clutch to the stage three? Is it jerky at low rpm take offs?
At first it was, but now its smooth as silk. I have yet to give it a hard launch but alot of freeway pulls and it's still holding strong. I think its VERY similar to the stock setup, just holds more power Im using the stock STi flywheel as well. I drove Evan's WRX with the stage 3 Spec clutch and it felt the same, very smooth and daily drivable.
Cool well I think I am going to go with a spec two or three. Does anyone think a lightened flywheel or aluminum flywheel is worth doing while I am in there?
some folks have been getting misfires with the drasticly lightened flywheels. misfires are detected through the CPS. if the crank accelerates/decelerates in an un-stocklike fassion, due to a lighter rotating mass, the CPS may detect what it believes to be a misfire..
i have the spec 3+ it only shakes because my huge freaking tmic is making all kinds of contact on my splitter. if i pop the hood, it's silent. at first it was pretty hard to drive in stop and go. but now, it's almost like stock. which is hard to deal with sometimes, because i forget how fast it engages and once in a while it slam it by accident.
A lightened flywheel isn't really noticable unless you drag race or autocross. Some people notice a little bit of a gain, most don't. Anything over 14 lbs won't cause a misfire code on an '02 WRX. That said- I have an 11lb flywheel on mine (Cut + Balanced Excedy) and love the way it accelerates and revs. Getting started is a little harder with a light flywheel than stock, my car is a little jerky if you don't know how to drive it.
