Just asking. I have been using the Stage 1 and now stage 2 91oct do to the fact 93 isn't nearly as available as the 92/91oct. Plus, most of it is 10% ethanol anyways. Don't want the engine to knock... Anyone run into any problems using the 93oct maps? No big deal? Is there really any noticable gain/loss switching from one to another that anyone has noticed?
I have found the 93 octane feels stronger even though on the cobb site they are the same power etc... but I can get '93' supposedly on 169 & 41 on my way home everyday....
Basically the only difference is in the timing. The 93 maps run about 2 degrees more timing than the 91 maps (and the ca91 is 2 degress less than the 91). I will try and post up a couple of screen shots of the timing tables. Russ
I ran the 93 map for awhile, I didn't notice much difference. I was using Holiday 93 Octane at the time.
Run the 91 map unless you have a QUALITY 93 (ie, BP/Amoco) octane fuel nearby. Running the 93 map with Blue Planet 93 gas would net me an IAM of 12-14. Not good. Hell, even some stations with 92 would lower the IAM while using the 91 map. Just because people say that they don't "notice any problems" doesn't mean that the car isn't running as safe as possible. FWIW, use the 91 map with BP/Amoco fuel from a busy station.
Wow I didnt know shell sold 93 now. Personally I have found with other car that the holiday 93 sucks. Most everyone at my work runs 91 non oxy gas. True they are not all wrxs but one kid doesnt have a problem hitting 22 lbs of boost on his vw with it.
I have been doing BP stations 92 in wisconsin and illinois when i drove to ohio a couple weeks ago, all the pumps for shell/bp said all gas was 10% ethenol. A big sticker posted right on the pumps. I used to do 93 Holiday when i first bought my car but BP has always had less additive stuff and didnt have ethenol... guess times are changing. I havent seen any 93 from a good station in the twin cities. actualy that was one of the fun parts of a drive ive done where we start in Illinois to get 93 gas when we start.
"Stg 2 91 verses Stg 2 93: Identical except for base ignition timing and low detonation fueling. Most of the largest advances to timing are in the higher load/rpm sites, although there is some additional timing at low to mid rpm and up to medium load. As far as fuel, it is slightly (almost negligibly) leaner in 6 cells at the highest rpm/load in the 93 map. Stg 2 91 verses Stg 2 California: Surprisingly, base and dynamic timing are identical between these two maps. In fact, everything is the same except for low detonation fuel, in which the California map is slightly richer in the last 3 load columns starting at 2000 rpm. "
I'm running an Xede with both a 91 and 98 map. I'm currently running the 98 map using 92 octane. I have a Fitch Fuel Catalyst and 1 step colder plugs (was tuned on heat range 6) and it runs fine. When I first bought the car it had the Vishnu stage 1 on it already and I didn't know what the switch was for so when I hit it, I got a CEL with in 5 min of driving. I talked to the seller and realized I switched it to the 98 map. Once I got the catalyst in it ran on the 98 fine and now with colder plugs it runs strong. I'm sure everyone will tell me I'm crazy for doing so but it works well.
