Stupid, n00b question follows...better off if we don't ask why, especially if I'm trying to sell one in the near future. It looks like there are two version of Coob AP v2 being sold, those compatible with 2.0 and those for 2.5 motors regardless of MY. Does the same hold true for v1. I've read some contradictory NASIOC postings not directly addressing this and would like to know if there is a difference between those for an 02-03 and 04-05. I haven't been able to find any information on Cobb's site either, not surprising considering they haven't been sold for awhile. I really don't give a rat's arse what the difference is, just whether there is one or not.
If I understand your questions.... when it comes from Cobb there is as the maps are set-up for that manu. year...IIRC (due to transmission types, etc...) either way you can download the latest maps for your MY year. so if you bought one that was originally sold for an 2004 there wouldn't be anything stopping you from downloading 02-03 maps and putting those maps on that AP....you just have to download the maps that fit your car. IIRC Cobb AP is just a transportation devise for the programming. you should have no issues loading any V1 map on a V1 accessport. just don't try to swap v1 maps with v2 maps.
There are three different versions of the v1 Accessport for the 2.0L WRX. 1. 2002-03 2. 2004 only 3. 2005 only HOWEVER.... There is a firmware "upgrade" somewhere out there that will convert an '05 AP to an '04 and vice-versa.
so let's say he buys an 2004 v1 and need 03 maps....he can't just download them? I thought I did this for someone recently:dunno:
Tom is closer. The ap needs to be for the year and tranny of the car (for v1 ap's). There is no firmware upgrade to convert the ap's to accept other maps. the 02-03 ap will work with the auto or manual tranny, and every year after that it will be tranny specific. so the list would be something like 02-03 wrx 04 wrx manual 04 wrx auto 04 sti 05 wrx manual 05 wrx auto 05 sti So yes there is a difference between the v1 ap's and they are car and tranny specific. You can not use maps for other years with your ap since the "maps" are different. The info is located in different locations in the ecu memory so putting the wrong map into the ap will cause some ecu issues. Russ
You appear to understand correctly, probably helps that we've had this discussion before and agreed. I understand there are MY specific maps though I've just recently read a thread on NASIOC where one poster was corrected another who insisted that 02-03 and 04-05 v1's are different and not compatible, then several other posters jumped into agree. A bit more research suggests that off the shelf they are indeed incompatible but a (potentially unsupported) AP firmware reflash can be done. The following is an example of discussion suggesting this is true. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1151022
Well, I can definitly tell you that with my protuner software that there is a HUGE difference between the ecu's. You can copy and paste map values, the the general size of the table is so different that it would no work properly. Russ
russ/tom, thanks for clearing this up. thinking back. i swapped maps for a v1 that was originally bought for an 03. then we downloaded the latest 02 maps.
I'll probably put on a for sale thread as soon as I receive it, bought for $385. PM me for further discussion or if you'd like to work a deal.
I just spoke to tim at cobb and he confirmed exactly what russ was saying.... :emo: you should be able to sell that thing real quick
