Ok, so I might be in the market for a set of coilovers. Had an issue with a spring install last night and thinking it was the omen needed to get me to hunt down a set of coilovers. I'm looking for something that will be solid at the track...and as corrosion resistant as possible. But, I'm really more interested in the track capabilities...can change out to the stock setup for winter. Options I've been looking at: -Cusco 02E - I don't really want spend the extra for the electronic adjustability, but I found a set on iwsti, waiting to see how much I can get them for. -Cusco 02R - bit more than I want to spend -Ohlins sportlines - really expensive -Kw v3 -RCE tarmac 2 - essentially the Kw v3, from RCE -BC ? I don't know anything about the BC's I know a few of you have the BC coilovers...wondering if anyone has used them on the track? Any others out there that you guys are using? Given my car is down and out until I find a solution, the sooner the better. Thanks, Mike
Mikey, I am currently running the BC Inverted setup on mine. Its been at DCTC on moderate settings. BIR is coming up in two weeks and than again in October. I am still working on the setup for these events. Currently these are working great for my needs, which are 80% street and 20% track. And installation was very simple, and I do plan to change them out before winter. Performance wise its very good, still learning to drive with the new setup and will make additional changes as needed. I have considered purchasing some really nice coilovers like the ones you have listed, but its just not practical for me, since I do mostly training events and I dont hit the track enough to justify the additional cost. Below is a very long thread Review for BC Racing. The customer service is excellent, as ImportImage went out of his way in contacting BC Racing to get one of our own board member's issue resolved. Enjoy, Cheech http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1085379&page=18
stupid question If I may be so ignorant, why would you switch them out for winter? Ride height maybe?
Lol those are made by BC, same coilovers from what I've been told I'd go with BC, rode in 3 cars with them and they felt really good.
ride height, or just protecting the coil overs from the cold and salt. Not all coils are made out of stainless steel.
Thanks bro. I'm thinking more and more that I'm going to go with a coilover setup. I probably have 4 years before this car is running 80% track time, so my split between daily and track is about the same as you. Maybe I'll contact Josh to see what his price is at for the inverted. Thanks for the help. Anyone else out there with a different coilover setup that they'd recommend. Mike
If you head on over to IWSTI, you can check out twiSTIes review on the BC/Megan coilovers. From his review, sounds like a good bang for the $1000 buck. I just installed Ohlins Sportlines on my 07. I've already done some autoxing on them. After installing them, it feels like a totally different car. The ride is so much more composed, I was actually upset that the car didn't handle this way straight from the factory. The only downside to them so far (if you can even call it one) is that the ride height setting supplied by Ohlins is too low for my tastes. I'm still trying to get the ride height correct, but that's more time-limited than anything.
 Good question....Other than I really enjoy taking them out. LOL  But really its due to changing out the wheels for snow tire setup. Need softer suspension w/more stroke for better winter performance, and like what was mentioned, longevity of these coilovers. Some of us like to play in the snow with our Scoobies.
not the same... megan= bc's base model bc br= 53mm dampers and locking collar design...at a VERY similar price then bc also makes inverted...bc FTW (yes i sell all of them) my 06 sti rides on bc BR series...as its a gt35 monster...that used to be a suspension/bbk car.
Oh, and this is the reason for my search. Damned strut top bolt. Again, I was applying the correct amount of torque to this. I'm actually glad it happened here and not while I was on turn 1 at BIR...ouch! sorry for the horrible pic...didn't really have anything to edit with at work here...doesn't help that it's a camera phone pic either.
no prob...check out this link...18 pages of unbiased reviews... http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1085379&page=18 from winning auto-x's to everything in between.
I let up at 135 this weekend. I wouldn't go any cheaper then 2k on coilovers. The PSS9s are out and getting good reviews. TiC is also finishing up pre-production tests of their new package that supposed to be around the 2k mark. If coilovers aren't a must then Prodrive just released their strut/spring replacement combo that's supposed to be pretty damn good... just waiting on real world reviews. I don't want to deal with the maintenace/noise issues on our roads so I'm hoping the Prodrive package is as good as they say it is.
2Gs is alot for most people to just drop on coilovers... nothing wrong with the cheaper stuff always either, especially if its not a tracked car but still aDD
+1...most people will be driving their vehicles to the limits only a handful of days per year...with the rest being daily driven, im sure they want some comfort...and we arent porsche owners, we are subaru owners. not everyone has money growing on trees, including myself. bc isnt the best out there, but for the $ im yet to see anything better...even close to their price range, im not talking about coilovers that have NO reviews...like that prodrive whatever combo. i have page after page of real peoples reviews...nothing made up. you cant buy customer service better then myself/bc racing...if anything goes wrong, we fix it. its that simple. if your looking for track only coilovers, get some dms, ohlins...something thats about 4 grand. i mean those make the 2k ones look silly...dont they. there is always bigger...there is always better. but it all has a cost.
If it's not a tracked car then you shouldn't be putting on coilovers anyway. Even if it's tracked a few times a year I will wouldn't put them on up here. My opinion from reading all the threads I could over the past month on IWSTI and talking to Strech, TiC and RCE is anything in the 1k range will leave you wishing you had gone for more. People spend thousands trying to make their car all JDM and faster yet always seem to try and slide by on tires and suspension. To me it's just the other way around. Again, just my opinion.
i put on coilovers, its driven daily on the street and i have yet to be able to get to an event... my stockers were blown, i got these extremely cheap and i wouldnt change my choice for anything. i run Apexi N1 Pro's with stiffer Swift springs and i love it, they arent cheap new either but they are more than usable on the street. dispite what you said, i love what my car changed into with simply putting on coilovers... to each their own.
if that was the case then why would so many megans and bc sales be so great? i honestly sell more coilovers then springs. they offer a compromise and adjustability. there is no should or should not, its what every user wants for themselves. i mean i have legacy gt's in NYC with uber large potholes and horrible roads riding on coilovers...and did they come and beat me up yet? nope. with 6/8 or 8/6 depending on the model you can find a pretty comfortable setting for daily driving. after all they are 30 way adjustable.
truth, i have my coilovers set nearly as high up as possible right now, dampening levels are near the softest they can be, and i love how they are, and to know if i want to switch it up or make them more aggressive i can is a nice piece of mind to have. to each their own, really... thats like saying well if your not going to track your car at all you dont need to have an STI, or you shouldnt get better brakes, or you shouldnt get the tires you want.
The piece you are missing, Florida boy , is Winter. I agree that if someone isn't using coilovers for track/autox, don't buy them. They will corrode in the winter...in exchange for what? Outisde of ride height adjustment, you can do the same on fixed perch struts. You don't need them, so why the hassle? If someone does 20% track (or autox) maybe they are worth it, but it will be a hassle. If someone is trying to be competitive, they will spend more $$, anyway. If the plan is to increase the amount of time on the track, why not get springs and adj struts until that time at which they can spring for a competitive setup. Just my $9.95.... Christian
Because they are cheap. They offer people an easy way out of the OEM FP with stiffer spring rates and camber adjustment. The shocks are... ...less then desirable to say it nicely.
florida boy? do some research, im from NJ, I've been through 20 winters up there, i think i know a thing or two about winter. You should talk to my canadian customers that will tell YOU what cold is ps if they corrode, bc fixes. the worst that happens is an allen bolt gets a little rusty and they send you new ones.
Regardless of the option I go with, I'll still put the smack down on any other similar powered car with a better suspension. Hell, I'll zip tie my broken strut in and show you who's boss Ok, kidding of course...plus I'm not good enough to make statements like that. First and foremost this is a Daily Driver that thinks it is a track car (for now). My goal is to one day (2-3 years from now) turn it into a competitive track car. I had one friend suggest either the Ohlin flag's or any Moton options...same guy who bought an Exige S and then has tweaked it to around 260hp at the wheels (not as cheap as tweaking a subaru to the same increase) sparing no expense. I asked for his advice, but realized that his suggestions might be a bit biased. At the end of the day, whatever I choose has to perform on the street and continue to be relatively comfortable for my wife and dog. I went from needing a new strut (really just the insert) to thinking about coilovers. Kind of a leap, yes. But, if a $1K setup is going to be an improvement over my current setup, then by all means I'm going to think about it. Would a $2K option be better, yeah likely. Am I still weighing my options, yes certainly. But the BC's are winning at the moment. I'm trying to get as many unbiased opinions as possible before making the decision as well. I don't mind getting opinions from BC and RCE (which I have), but I'm trying to focus moreso on those who use the product to sell me on one or the other. Thanks again for all of the responses both to those posting here and to those that I've PM'ed. Mike
ok, in a slight turn of events, i just received an email from RCE saying that they're going to send me the strut I need so that I can get my car back on the road. To be honest, I was kind of floored by this, but am more than happy that I won't have to drop the coin on a new setup quite yet. Oh, and not to worry, coilovers are in the future for my car...just not this week Thanks RCE, you've made my day! Well, helped my pocket book anyway...I was really looking forward to coilovers Mike
Damn, that was really nice of them. It's a good thing though. Have you been following the TiC suspension thread on IWSTI? They're close, real close.
I have been following it, but only as of last night. This will give me an opportunity to follow it a little more closely. Mike
You are in FL, hence the comment (I think you got the sense that it was a joke). Anyway, I have seen much worse than an allen bolt corrode. Salt and sand get in the threads and it is all over after that.... I would refure to wait for a replacement unless they sent it before sending in the damaged coilovers to them(car without struts = no movement!)... I do know what cold is ....ever been on a snowmobile @ 100mph when it is -25F? Hell, I have been up at Lk Vermillion when it hit -45F, we even had to pee outside :eek4: ...and walked 10 blocks to school when it was -25F! (and it was uphill both ways. hehe)
better you then me, i like it in old peopleville...no freezing...no road salt..no problems. (unless there is a hurricane )
2G's on coilovers...that means you can just buy 2 set's of BC to make it $2k..lol nothing beats a dual setup on suspension...hahaha
