I believe Comcast has been supplying us with sh1tty cable modems. The standard speeds are now at 6mb. I ran some tests and was at less than half that. I had the techs come today and they installed a new modem. The guy said their modems they give ppl first are slow. So pretty much they are screwing us over.

This is what you do. Go to this site:
    http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

click on chicago. This will run an up/dwn load speed test. I ran mine on the old modem and got about 2.5mb..well under 6mb. After the new modem I am now running at 5.7mb. Much faster. The techs are free so might as well take advantage of it.

I'm getting in the low 4000s. What kind of modem did you have before? And what did they give you after?

4114kbps down, 354kbps up, not bad considering my cable modem config says,

Maximum Downstream Data Rate: 4.40 Mb/s
Maximum Upstream Data Rate: 0.38 Mb/s

so I'm getting pretty close to what it's supposed to be. I have a 3com sharkfin style cable modem, it's about 5 years old.

I wonder if they do the upgrades in stages. I used to have 3 MB and it took a while after they announced 4 MB speeds before I hit those speeds. Now I see 6 MB, but I'm still stuck at 4 MB.

Guess I could give them a call and see what's up.

reboot, 6mb, What? I've had comcast cable here in andover since it was available. I still have that crappy Surfboard modem and i've never been able to pull more than 2.6Mb. It may be the crappy firmware on my Wireless B router (suppots up to 11mbps), or something cuz i can't pull close to what you guys are. How to i get myself hooked up for the 6mb shiznit? Reboot, are you referring to unplugging the modem and letting it come back on again, i have to do that like 5 times a day just to get the net. I think my modem is funked up.
