so i have a couple questions on my older windows tower i built in 07 the video just stopped working so i tried a different graphics card and it worked for about 5 minutes the turned off. then rebooted and it did the same thing computer seems to boot fine like it gets to the bios screen and i still have to press f1 and then does stuff i know this only because the led on the motherboard stops at 7f, means awaiting keyboard intpt. can i have a bad pci-e slot? or is it a bad motherboard? there is no onboard graphics on the motherboard i pulled this tower out off mothballs to hook it up to external hard drives and keep it hooked to my bedroom tv and also get a wireless keyboard with a trackpad any input or thoughts would be great thanks
does the board have more then one pci-e slot? if so try the other slot. Also what kind of keyboard are you using ps2 or usb
If the machine appears to be on and the issue is just that there is no video, you could try connecting from another machine if you have a program such as Log Me In or similar installed. This will at least allow you to do some troubleshooting to determine if it is driver related, faulty cards, or mobo/hardware issues. Or, does the motherboard have an integrated vga/dvi?
I have had this problem before on an old HP Slimline computer. Turned out to be my monitor cable running from the machine to monitor. I also had another computer I put together that the CPU failed and the tower lights would come on but nothing else happened. So start simple and try another monitor cable and go from there.
Also if you have multiple PCI slots make sure its in the Primary slot. Check manufacture website for which slot is primary on your board.
how does power supply effect it? i have other pci slots but not other pci-e which is what kind of cards i have to work wit i tried different monitors: my tv which i worked on before and monitor i know is good i tried different cables: i tried a dvi and a vga cable on each of the 3 cards i tried i mean the cpu could have gone out but it looks like its booting normally acting normal reacting to my keyboard input normally my motherboard does not have an onboard video card either i tried both usb keyboard (in a good usb slot) and a ps2 keyboard in all scenarios side note as well it seems 2 of my usb slot also do not work
I (thought I) had a video issue when going into 3d on an old machine. It was the CPU overheating. Maybe check MB/CPU temps in bios on one of the cards that work? (Sorry, I've been out the PC game for a bit.) I took apart my whole machine, air in a canned it, then put it all back together with the new heatsink and it works as well as can be expected for how old it is.
i cant get any cards to work now in the pci-e slot the did work then stopped when they did cpu was a little over 100 F very normal
have you tried booting into anything else other then windows like using a copy of ubuntu boot from cd and running that to see if maybe its your windows install has some kind of corruption?
if most of your slots and ports are starting to fail, i think it could be your mother board. I have an extra one laying around if you want to test it. It sounds like you have a gigabyte board since you can see the error codes on the little counter on the board? My board is also gigabyte and if you want to test it let me know. I have a full comp sitting in a box so we can test each part except for a HD if you want.
