Hey, I am workign on my friend compy its a amd 2600+ with i believe an ASRock K7sigx mobo. heres the deal. when you power it up it will bring you to the first loading screen. (the one where you hit f2 to go to the bios) from here it will stop, and it will say that the auto-detect failed to find the primary hard drive. i have tried 2 hard drives and they both come up the same way. so i put the hard drives into my compy as slaves. my compy wont boot with them in there. it will go through the normal boot, but before it goes to xp it will bring up the screen showing boot failed insert system disc. as of now i havent had any luck with the HDs running them aster or slave. i am kinda curious if the issue lies in the power supply. it might be surging or something and killing the HDs. my friend (other friend) just put in the second HD a few nights ago with Vista on it. he had it working at his place for a few hours. next day he brough it over to the friends house and same thing happens. HD makes a few (maybe? normal) clicky sounds then stops at the same spot. what is wrong here? is it a bad HD? i dont really wanna through my good master into this computer if i cant be assuered that the power suply isnt falty. i am gonna try and dig up some extra compy power cables so i can use my power suply to run my hd in her compy. (if that makes sense) coudl it be something bios/cmos related? i am gonna try to figure out how to reset the cmos on this thing, that may help. EDIT: new info. i just stuck my HD into her compy (drawing power from my pc) and it flew past the boot screen with flying colors. i got another error, but i occaionsally get that on my desktop anyway. but when i run the other 2 HDs this way i get the same issue. i am leaning towards the power supply being teh issue, and it is frying HDs with some sugring or something. but i cannot be sure of this, without braving using my HD w/ her power and risking a another dead HD. EDIT 2: just cleared teh CMOS no further luck. i am now leaning towards the idea that the power supply is destroying teh HDs (but the system has always been used through a surge protector). cuase it appears the system works fine other then that. ideas! please!
I had that problem once, there was an extra jumper on the hard drive. You probably already checked that though. How big is the power supply?
i might have to buy a power supply tester. as for teh HD it clicks when it first powers up but then quites down.
i've 'toasted' a few hd, same problems that you got also jumper settings and cables can be problems at times too
^ tried a different IDE cable, same issue. jumpers are all correct. i handed this off my buddy chris for the weekedn cuase i wont be around. we have a new power supply we are gonna try, in combination with a new (old) hd. a 3 gig that only has xp on it, so no biggieif its a bust.
