All right, so I went to do my timing belt on my '00 RS and found out the hard way that when the shop manual calls for a Specialty Tool, you'd best have it. After getting the radiator off and belts out of the way, the crankshaft pulley nut wouldn't budge since the pulley itself will keep spinning. So... I need to ask for a huge favor from ANYONE that can give me a hand - I need that crankshaft pulley wrench.

No one around here even has one in stock that would even suffice, and Subie dealerships are a good 3 to 4 days out. I'd like to do my tbelt before I leave for Pike's Peak this friday, and tonight's really the only night I have left to do it. If any of you have one of these wrenches, please let me know, and I'd gladly pay you a "rental" fee for it. I just need to get this damn pulley off so I can continue on with my blissful life.

Give me a call if you've got one and you're in the metro area (or Mankato - it's where I'll be doing the work). My number is 763.360.5398. Thanks in advance.

Oh, and if anyone has any other tips on how to do it *without* the tool, let me know, I'm all ears. Thanks guys!

Put your car on the ground, and then put the transmission in 5th gear. You will also need a breaker bar.

We had it jacked up, in gear, with the brakes applied. However, it was in 1st gear, not 5th, and it still turned. Would that make a difference?

You can use the starter to "bump" it loose, use a long breaker bar and prop it on the ground. Just be sure to double check you've got it the right way before you hit the starter, and disconnect your coil so the car doesn't actually start. When you go to put the pulley back on, the clutch+brakes will hold enough torque to tighten the nut

Otherwise, I do have a homemade pulley wrench that you could borrow. It works on EJ22 pulleys, I know the EJ25 pulleys are a bit different, but you're welcome to try it.

Hmm, the starter idea is interesting. I might be able to give that a try. And the pulleys are different between the two so I doubt your tool will work. Thanks for the offer though.

Just wanted to post a follow-up: The 5th gear trick worked; however, our 18-inch breaker bar wasn't cutting it so we went out and got a 48-inch piece of pipe. That did the trick. Thanks for all the tips guys.

The "PIPE" always works better than a breaker bar. Floor jack pipes are neat!
