I was talking to a friend today when the subject of "The Worst Areas in the Twin Cities" came up. I've only been moved back up here for 4 months now and don't really know the places to avoid. Northwest Minneapolis has been mentioned to me a few times. Where, exactly, should I not go? Where are the worst parts of the city for drugs and crime?
I live by cedar riverside, not liking it at all... (between Augsburg and the U). Not dangerous that I have run into, but not the safest either. Someone broke into my house to steal my mountain bike back in September...
Very few areas. North Minneapolis is basically it Avoid Cedar Riverside (and I mean the actual complex and the light rail station) at night if alone. St Paul as some rougher areas, but nothing that horrible if you're not looking for trouble. I'd note like 50% of crime in St. Paul seems to happen on Sherburne Ave.
Is that on the west side of the River? A classmate said that if you roll in the North Memorial area you'll get asked for drugs whenver you stop.
I hear Stinson and Broadway is a really bad area It seams as though there is a lot of talk about N. Mpls but who knows it seams there can be trouble just about anywere these days. just need to stay on your toes when you're out n about.
Srsly. Even Mpls 'hoods aren't that bad but if you can't identify when you're entering a suspect area it only affirms Darwinism works. http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/crime-statistics/
I lived in Northside since i got into this country, and grew up with black/thugs and all the bad influences. The most bad areas was in NE MPLS on central ave. That's where all the shooting at. I got shot at the Pro Billards that one night...I think they already shut down because of the gangwar ( manace of destructions). Again I was young back then....
There is crime everywhere. Hit up woodbury/maplewood. It is a bunch of 16 year old white thugs. They shoot, they steal, they vandalize with the best of them. Doesn't matter where you go, if you look for it, it will find you. Russ
Your telling me that anything West of 94 and north of 55 is not a bad area? Your insane. I worked in that area quite a bit for 3 years about 8 years ago, it hasn't changed. N Mpls is not a good area at all. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=...443&spn=0.036718,0.065403&t=h&z=14&iwloc=addr
ssssouff minneapolis isnt a treat either, I know this because of community service i had to do there when i was a young dumb stump.
Yes There's also certain areas around lake street where most prostitution (and lots of drug dealing) happens. It's actually not generally on lake but around lake, esp near 35. However, really, it no where you'd go on accident.
As somebody who doesn't live in the area, may I ask where is a decent place to live that is within public transportation of downtown Minneapolis?
South Side Would recommend South Minneapolis near Edina/Richfield which is fairly close to downtown and uptown. More $$ closer to the lakes or u-town, naturally. Once the sun goes down then most places close to downtown can be sketchy. Used to work in NE Mpls for 6 years near E. Hennepin and Central so made sure when I went ouf for lunch that I did not bring anything valueable with me like a billfold, watch, or ring. Only was asked for money 3X. Should mention that E. Hennepin/University started flourishing about 6 years ago and is considered the "NEW" uptown due to all the new restaurants, clubs, etc.
Haha, 10 years ago I made the bright idea to bypass traffic on 694/94 going home to STP. Went S somewhere past 169 and somehow ended up around W Broadway, in that neighborhood. I never had so many stares, lol. People driving next to me flicking me off. Haha I just stared straight ahead and prayed 94 would come up soon. What a dump. Plus getting flicked off by all the brothers ruined my day. Not sure why, I was driving a car they wouldn't even steal!
i think safest (and might be cheaper then uptown) area in south minneapolis would be east of 55 around lake... a little quieter and most crime/trouble are just kids.. not so much drugs and gangs.. thats just from my experience of living in minneapolis for most of my life..
1. It is "you're" - the contraction for "you are". Also, I'm not insane. I have friends that live in that area. Are there bad spots? Hell yes. Is it universally bad? Hell no. Also, it has changed, even if only marginally, since you worked there. I'm not saying it is "not bad". I am saying that it is all relative and if you can't identify a "bad" area on sight than you are most likely a moron and Darwinism should be allowed to work its course. Further, what is considered a "bad" area in MN would be considered an area of gentrification in larger urban settings - e.g. Chicago. Remember, butter is a spice to most Scandahoovians so it is not surprising that many Anglos in MN disproportionately associate neighborhoods containing any significant amount of residents of "color" as being "bad". Latent racism is a bitch and this thread reeks of it.
Anywhere along Hiawatha/55 from downtown to the SE towards MSP airport. Lots of nice older neighborhoods.
well, there's always downtown Minneapolis. Areas around the 46th and 50th st light rail stops are decent. Mac-grove could be decent (in terms of public transit, the neighborhood is really nice) as long a syou're near a bus that goes to LR. Taking the 16 or 50 just takes for ****ing ever. This is kind of true. There are no truely horrible neighorhoods in Minneapolis, even compared to Sacramento (where I grew up, not known for huge urban poverty issues). I have not been in one neighborhood in MSP that I would be afraid to be in during the day. However, while it is true that most "bad" neighborhoods listed here can be identified by being less white than the general population, i is also often true. This is because of two factors: 1: Bad neighborhoods are generally poor neighborhoods. 2: Due to a variety of factors (notibly a long history discrimination) certain minority groups are less affluent than whites. As this town is shocklying white, the varations are a bit more obvious here than in say California, which is less than 50% white. Moving here from sacramento, once listed as the most diverse city in the US, it was shocking.
kewl. So around Broadway and Stinson I'm ok??? I grew up in Wayzata/Plymouth, so the idea of people getting shot in an area near me is a bit foreign. It was all blow and drunk driving @ Wayzata High School.
+1, if I was looking for easy public transport, I'd go for something near Hiawatha around these stops. The bus, for the most part, just takes too long. I lived right near 38th and Hiawatha for a couple years and never had a problem. Otherwise, the downtown warehouse district "north loop" has lots of new development, condos and apartments. 1st and 2nd St N, around 3rd Ave N.
I've lived in Golden Valley for almost six years and worked on the public safety side of it for over 4 of those. There aren't really any bad areas in the city, although there are some apartment complexes I wouldn't choose to live in. It's a bit of a black hole for the most part. Listening to the PD/FD mains, you hear a lot of calls going on around us but it seems to be a bit slower in GV. Not that there aren't problems, but there seems to be fewer of them.
Really? I didn't seem to think so. Not as upscale as if you head a mile southwest of that, but I certainly don't get much of a dangerous vibe from that area.
http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police/crime-statistics/codefor/index.asp I think this is probably more useful than the shots fired map, though look over a period of weeks. This is probably a good reality check, not that much violent going one outside of 4th precint (north minneapolis) and an bisolated bit of 3rd (south-east, though the crime is really just in the north-west corner, north of lake, east of 35, west of 55)
2004. Great place for an education, ****ty place to learn about how the world works. 1/4 of the sophmore class gets a new car for their 16th birthday. What is that ****?
