I went back to my parents this weekend and enlisted my brother to help build a light bar for my XT. It started with a chunk of 1" light wall box steel and ended with something i'm quite happy with. I still have to sand it down, prime it and then spray it. And obviously through on some lights and i'll post up pics as it comes to a finish but here are pics of the build....
I figured out why you can weld so well upside down (under a car)... You're effectively upside down here in the US from Australia's perspective. haha
yea i'll take some more after it dries... i painted it today... once i re-mount it i'll take a few under car shots for ya
looking directly at the bar as its on the car is like a diamond shape. when i mount the lights which will be on the bottom of the bar, i'm going to drill through the bar (both sides) and use an 1 1/2" or 1 3/4" carriage bolt and bolt on the universal bracket that comes with the fog lights.... as i get them mounted and wired up i'll take some up close pics of that process also
heres the bar painted and a quick mock up of the general look, i'm thinkin probably going with the round, but i kinda like the rectangular ones also.... i dunno well see, sorry for the crappy cell pics
here is a few not so great pics of where its mounted. Subaru was kind enough to actually drill out the frame so there is no need to try to find a place to bolt onto. The only thing is the under engine plastic, which really isn't much of a problem either. just took a utility knife and cut the plastic where the existing hole is and then ran a 3 1/2" long bolt through and there you have it....
haha... I wasnt meaning to sound rude... kinda hard to word that without it sounding mean... I guess I meant looking at that pic I was scared but they cleaned it up real nice.. I like it... How sturdy will it be when some lights are added??? wait to see the final results !!
well i can grab onto the bar and move the front end around as easy as if i was stepping on the bumper.... i probably wouldn't put all my weight on it but a few driving lights should have zero effect.... I'm just curious to see how sturdy the brackets are that the lights come with, hopefully they are strong enough that driving at highway speeds and whatever else, doesn't effect the position i set them at
well i finally got it finished... stayed up late last night wiring up the lights and now all is good... tonight if i have a chance i'll go and aim them and take some night pics for comparison and whatever
its one carriage bolt that goes through the entire bar to hold the mounting bracket and then another that holds the lamp to the bracket... so technically its 2 per lamp yes
well got them aimed tonight but unfortunately the camera doesn't do it justice... lets just say they are obnoxiously bright and i feel bad for the people that piss me off and i get to blind them... heres some pics though
when i get a chance to i'll take some in cabin shots... i tried one night but was in a rush to go out to eat with the wife that they ended up real blurry so, one of these days i'll get some for ya
