more bad luck for me with the sti. on sunday i took off the wrx suspention and put the sti stuff back on. when taking off the right front wheel i noticed that there was grease on the wheel. when looking around i had seen that there is a cut in the cv axle boot or rubber cover. now this is a car that i have yet to drive 2000 miles in and had for less then a month. so to all that knows about this part, is it under warranty by subaru? have 48k on the car for miles. or ware can i get this part and for how much? and how hard would it be to replace this part?

don't get discouraged man.....actually morries is putting a new one on my right rear as we speak. I'll know the price tomorrow. (I think they said it was 1 hour labor plus part cost)

I've never installed one myself, but I know they are time consuming.

    ahh an axle.

axles are fairly simple to change. the expensive part wil be the new axle. STi parts arnt cheap. IIRC the STi does not have a roll pin holding the axle into tranny. so it just pops out (saving tons of time/hassle)

So STi axels just "pop" out huh? What keeps them from coming out? I'm just curious since apparently I need to pull the stub axels out of my 5 speed to put into my 6MT.

04 STI's have a female CV with a roll pin. 05 - current STI's have male cv's that have a circlip that locks it in the front diff. Matt its an easy job to get done if you have the right tools.

you prolly can get a boot, but i bet it would be decent amount of work to get the boot on. i would just get a new one, since your old one has prolly collected alot of dust by now.

    thanks for the correction matt.

    good luck

youa re also going to want to repack it with grease when replacing the boot so no foriegn object are in there. usually they get damaged when doing suspension when a strut gets dropped from the top onto it.

sometimes for the price of just the boot you are better off just replacing teh whole axle.. as Martin said.. who knows what got in there while it was open... and the amount of time to do either will be similar..

well called subaru today. totle cost for parts: $33 with the discount. thats for the boot, boot kit ( they have two, one that is universal with the bindings and grese for $9 or the sti binding witch are more $ and then u buy the grese seperate for $12) and a axle nut. than asked how much for them to install it for me and that was $160 for one and a half hours of work. i think i will do it myself. so cheep fix.

that's cheap, I still have yet to get my car back. Morries ordered the wrong boot for mine. oh well. Mike at minnetonka gave me about the same price on the parts.
