SO I have to clear the gas cap cel everytime I drive on the highway for more than 10 miles, it hardly happens, if ever, if I just drive in town. But once I hit the hwy the light comes on after 10-20 miles. I replaced the cap and it still happens, what the hell is the deal!? I also checked the evap by the gas tank and under the hood with nothing unusual to be found.
I just got this cel the other week. Finally picked up the cap, but i haven't installed it yet. We'll see if it works. Good luck on yours :-/
I hate to do this.....but have you made sure it's on there tight (like, turn it until it clicks a few times?) having never actually owned a car new enough for it to be an issue , I will make a stab in the dark. there's a sensor that tells the ECU to throw that code.....so I'm guessing that if the cap is there and tightened correctly, there's something else tripping this sensor. either the sensor itself, or something else. if it's a sensor right at the cap (I don't remember there being any wiring up there....), probably just the sensor. if it gets that based on pressure and/or temperature within the tank (would explain why it takes a while before it actually turns on), then maybe there's something else causing this condition. a small leak in the filler neck, or near the pump. not enough for fuel to actually leak out, but enough to cause a pressure change. my understanding, is that this CEL is there primarily to make sure you're not driving around with the cap off.....so I wouldn't think that a new cap would be required. but, again....my knowledge is limited......so swallow that grain of salt
What other things do you have done to your car? A fuel pump plate seal can cause the same code to set if you have ever messed with the fuel pump... Otherwise, check to make sure that your fuel filler tube pipe isn't rusted anywhere badly.
just stage 2 with bolt ons and the stock fuel pump, the seal goes bad on the cap thats why I replaced it and the filler neck looks fine.
Is this the EVAP CEL? I know a number of people have had trouble with the wiring on the charcoal canister below the trunk.
Came on twice with me. Once last year and once this year. Went away both times with a few tanks of gas with injector cleaner. I used an OBDII to clear it after the tanks with cleaner in it. P.S. I used the OBDII before the tanks and it kept coming back right away both times. After the cleaner it's been gone. Did this to me both times after it was garaged for a while.
