So my sister may be moving here later in the summer and we are considering shipping her car (San Francisco to here). I know some of you guys have bought/sold/shipped cars, so what're your recommendations? Worth it? Who do you suggest? Thanks for the help!
I don't think she wants to do the 2-3 day drive alone. I'm also considereing taking a day off work to fly up there and drive back with her. So it might be worth $600 if you consider plane ticket, gas money, lodging, and food.
minneapolis is not a prime stop on normal shipping routes so it a in general a bit harder to get things picked up here, but shipping from the west coast is common so it might not cost a ton ($600-$1000) Buyer of my yellow car paid $1200 to have it shipped to seattle FYI.
It shouldn't take you 3 days to drive it here. Talk to the truckers as soon as you get to Idaho, they'll hook you up with some speedballs, that should keep her awake till at least North Dakota. Take a nap at a rest stop, then truck it the rest of the way.
It took me from SF TO MN...ummmm...32hrs. so about 1.5 days...rest inbetween (me and belinda) Whole drive...I think was about 5 gas fill...empty to full on my 95 civic EX babi, about 2000 miles I think...with a full load, can't even use the rear view mirror...at least 6 luagage full
Lol Anyway, 30something hours is right. Last time I made the trip it was about that. I love driving and road trips and what not but she doesn't, so it will be a 2.5 to 3 day trip. Any suggestions on companies you've used for shipping or websites to check out?
Why don't you just drive to her..Then drive back..Or just go buy some speedballs..heroin+cocaine=driving for weeks on end. :run:
The whole point is to get her car here. So unless I rent a car and drive there, drop it off, then we drive her car back... Hopefully she can talk her employer into shipping the car... They did pony up a grand or so for furniture delivery when she moved from San Diego to San Francisco. So... Any suggestions for delivery companies?
i know that we load ocean containers domesticly and put them on the rail and from minneapolis to oakland CA is 775$ plus that is for a 40ft container so you can fit a lot more in it than just the car but then you need to figure some cost out for a trucker to bring it from the rail to you.
Yeah, I could go for a little road trip as well. Take care of the plane ticket and gas and I'll get it back to MN for you.
Just had mine shipped a few months ago from san diego, it was $450, had to pick it up in fridley. http://www.dasautoshippers.com/ Only get the insurance if your current insurance company wont cover it. call them and ask mine did (state farm)
das is cheap and nice, but my guy didnt want to use them because of multiple horror stories about leaving cars in weird lots and damage. Its hit or miss depending on where the car ends up or is being shipped, but definitely the easiest on the wallet.
I drove from LA to Minneapolis in about the same amount of time. All we needed was one night of good sleep, and we did that in Colorado. It's a really easy drive with 2 people, and probably less expensive than shipping the car.
If we can stand each other for 30 hours in a confined space:laugh: Actually, we'll probably do this if her employer doesnt ship the car for her. I figure: 2050 miles Averaging 70 mph takes ~29.3 hours, Averaging 80 takes ~25.6, so 2 days and 1 night. 2 days food = $50 1 night stay = $50 2050 miles/40mpg = 51.25 gal x ~$3.25 = ~$166.56 gas money one way flight = ~$150 1 day unpaid vacation between the 2 of us = ~$500 So about $900 total to drive
Wildwood shipped both of my cars. They use their own trucks and drivers. One was shipped from MA, one was from CA. Both were about $800. They drop it off where ever you want. They dropped one of them downtown at Solera for me. Great communication with them. I talked directly with the driver for coordinating the drop off time and spot. http://www.wildwoodautotransport.com/index.htm
