My 99 2.5RS with 115k is making a fairly loud whirring noise above about 35 mph. The noise almost goes away when I let off the gas. The sound is definitely coming from the rear. I decided to check the rear diff fluid and found it was kind of a milky grey color. So I replaced it with some Amsoil 75w90. I noticed a couple larger pieces on the magnet. Maybe 1/4" by 1/16'. I only saw one that large and there wasn't much black goo. The noise is unchanged after this. I jacked up the rear end to check the wheels for movement. I didn't feel any play in the wheels. It was in neutral and the ebrake was off. I don't notice any difference in noise from left or right turns. I was thinking wheel bearing, but thought maybe something was wrong in the differential. Anyone have any ideas?
ohh hahah ... I am quite familiar with this ... whirring you speak of. ESP if off the gas - differential. I'd have it listened to just to be sure ... but if it stops when you stop givin it gas .... :raise: my poor, poor wagon... heh
Anyone know what years of used differentials might work? Will it just bolt up, say from an auto 2002-3 WRX? It looks like the 4.111 ratio is the same. Or would I then need new axles and drive shaft? I found this : http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/lsd/lsd.html Not sure how accurate it is.
I was down at Meineke today. Nathan took it for a spin and got it up on the lift. Looks like its the differential shaft bearings going out. Anyone have a 4.111 LSD laying around? Thanks again Nathan.
