I am looking to pick up a digital camera so I can take better photos than my crappy cell phone.

I mostly take pics for selling things online but would like to venture into photos of my car, etc.

I'm thinking under $200 for sure. Point and Shoot would probably be best given the price range and my photography skill set...

    Anyone have any reccomendations?

I have had 2 simple cameras in the past few years ($150) range. they both got the job done. Both Kodak Easy Share. You can get one that would fit your needs for $100bucks. BUT, I don't think you'll be satisfied with your "photos". These cameras have grainy imagining that doesn't go beyond "snap shot" quality. Either just grab any number of camera for $100 bucks and call it a day. Or consider investing more than $200 on something that you can take quality photos that you can cherish for years to come. If I could do it over again, I would not have bought my 2nd cheaper camera. The pictures are simply not satisfying. If you have the money, expand your budget.

Note: there was recently a blog about the 10 things you shouldn't buy this year. Plane Jane digi cams was in the list. They said that they are quickly becoming obsolete and that the new generation of cameras, while quite a bit more expensive today, are far and away superior.

i love my canon power shot SD1200 IS digital elph. it is 10 mega pixels, canon zoom lens 3x15 6.2-18.6mm 1:2.8-4.9.
its a good point and shot with alot of options. time shuter speed from 1sec to 15sec, change aspect ratios and white balence and so on. use this at partys with friends or just keep it in my car.
i also got a nikon D50 for $250 and love the camera.

I think a DSLR camera is just too much for me. I have been taking pictures with a cell phone prior to now so I think a quality Point and Shoot will be what I need.

I think I could go $250 if it was really special. :)

The Canon Powershot looks nice I think I may go to BestBuy this weekend and try some out before buying one cheaper online. :)

    Thanks for the feedback!

I have heard good things about the nikon coolpix line as far as a simple to use compact point an shoot goes. Maybe something to look into. I know they have several models under 250$.

I've been happy with my Nikon, I believe it's a Coolpix S9......The only problem I had was using the Wi-fi feature, and I could really care less about it.....

I've had a Canon powershot for around 5 years now (its about a 6 mpixel). Still kicking and taking good "point and shoot" photos.

The GF had a casio exilim camera, and for a PS it was sweet. Until she dropped it.

That one is a step up from what she had, but that is what we are going to replace it with. And comparing the pics that things produces compared to my d300, it is a sweet little camera.

You need to decide where you want to take it. You can pick up some decent deals on dslr cameras that are going to cost you around what a good PS will cost. The thing is, a dslr will allow room to grow, the PS is pretty much the end product. And with some of the entry level dslr cameras, they are no more complicated than a nice PS.

    Me too.

My first real digital camera was a 2MP canon powershot. I ended up replacing it with an 8MP sony, but I think the 2MP canon took better pictures.

Thanks for all the recommendations. A DSLR is looking like the better investment, allbeit, more expensive. I think I am going to go to a Ritz Camera here in town and try out a few low end DSLRs and also Best Buy to try out a few Point and Shoots, probably from the Nikon Coolpix and the Canon Powershot lines to make a decision.

    Again, Thanks!
