So as I'm leaving work on Monday my girlfriend, Emily, calls me, "I'm in the ditch what do I do?". We live on a twisty gravel road and it turns out she was only about 3/4 of a mile from home. I know exactly which curve she is talking about because my rear tires try to beat my front tires around this curve on a daily basis (I love this road, only in the summer though because my current tires suck on ice and snow, so I am actually cautious in the winter). She ended up walking home to wait for me.
When I got home from work I called my dad who lives next door and owns a pickup. My stepmom had the truck and wouldn't be home until late that evening . We decided to try to pull her car out with my car. I forgot to mention she has a '97 Legacy wagon and mine is a '03 Legacy wagon.
When my dad and I got to the car it was evident how the scene had played out. She actually made it almost completely around the curve. I'm guessing she tried to accelerate as she was exiting and got some 4eat under steer, then she locked up the brakes (no ABS) and slid strait for the far edge.
Her car was only partially in the ditch. The left rear was still on the road, the left front was buried in the snow bank on the shoulder as was the right rear. The right front was dangling precariously over the swamp. It appeared it just needed a little nudge to get it out. I'd like to give a big thank you to Subaru for designing our cars with built in tow hooks. After about ten good yanks of the tow strap the little green BK was back on the road.
That brings us to today. Emily sends me a text 'I am in the ditch and now so is linda (my neighbor). help.' That is twice in less than a week on the same curve. This time she was going the other direction. :unamused: The neighbor happened by with her pickup shortly after Em got her car stuck in the snow bank and offered to give her a push... with her Silverado! :eek4: She accepted the offer... I am still in awe that this even remotely sounded like an acceptable way of remedying this situation. Anyways they attempted to push on the back of the wagon with the front of the Silverado. They were able to move the car a little, but couldn't get it out. Thankfully there wasn't any major damage done, just a chip and a small crack in the reflector between the tail lights. It could have been much worse.
When trying to back up, the neighbor slid her truck down into the ditch and just about buried it. She really tore up some turf to get out. She ended up giving my GF a ride back to the house to wait for me to get home.
Well everyone is out of the ditch now and safely back in the garage. Can anyone tell me how someone who has lived in Minnesota and drives a perfectly capable winter car can go in the ditch twice in the same week on the same corner? (it's really not that sharp and has nice banking on the inside)
P.S. two years ago she put her old Legacy ('96 sedan) in the ditch pulling into my dad's driveway. We pulled her out, she drove less than a 1/4 mile down the road and went in the ditch pulling into my driveway!!!!!:laugh:
I know this was long, I just needed to rant, thanks for reading.

Sounds to me like some people in that area need to learn to drive in the winter again. lol Slow and steady win the race.

My thoughts exactly. It might be a good idea to send her to the upcoming winter driving class.
