Since my car will be/should be sold within the next two weeks, I've been looking for WRXs for sale in the area and I came across this one on CarSoup. Anybody know this guy or know the car? Is he a member here? Would be great to get some more info, and yeah I could call him about it (and probably will once my car is officially gone) but it'd be cool to get some neutral opinions. Thanks!

Well, I don't know much about that car specifically, but here's my 2 cents.

That thing has a lot of mods.

Are you looking for a DD car, or a project car? How mechanically car-savvy would you rate yourself?

At first glance it looks to be worth the money, lots of nice stuff. I think Bullwinkle is asking some good questions. While this looks to be a pretty good deal it could, like most modded cars, could quickly get expensive if you have to start paying people to fix them.

Yeah I was kind of iffy on buying it for the simple fact that it IS modded so heavily...lots of go-fast goodies usually mean the car has been driven fairly hard, or one would assume so at least. I am looking for a daily driver, so this car probably isn't what I should be looking for, I'm guessing? I'd say I'm fairly car savvy, been into the hobby since I had my diapers changed in the back of an early-30's Nash Lafayette (which was 4 weeks ago  j/k). Though, the reason I'm on these forums now and asking these questions is because I'm kinda new to imports, Subaru specifically. There's a silver 02 WRX I'm gonna be checking out this weekend in Moorhead, looks to be pretty much stock. Think that'd be a better bet for me?

yeah, that 2002 you're referring to....if you check it out pay close attention to how the bottom end (short block) sounds. 20g on a 2.0L needs to be taken care of...and if the owner didn't take care of it then I'd say it's a time bomb just waiting to blow/fall apart

Yeah, to be honest, unless you are fairly knowledgeable about Subaru's specifically (or are inclined to learn really quickly), I'd recommend you purchase an unmolested one (or as close as you can find :)).

    Good luck.

This is a good buddy of mines from HS. He has been having problems with the oil hoses blowing. It has been a quite troublesome car. I know quite about the car. He bought it about 4 months ago and is getting rid of it cause it has been such a pain. I hate to say that for his case and trying to sell it but i wouldnt want a member to get a car that has been trouble. He bought it with all the mods so he didnt know much about it. The body is great but if i was you i wouldnt choose to do it inless your able to do the work your self to keep it up. Hope that helps. The car is located in Detroit Lakes and his name is Colin.

If you aren't 100% about it, skip it.

Even if it were running 100%, this car probably wouldn't make the best DD for a few reasons. Front mount + front end collision = :emo:. Heavy clutch may suck depending on your commute. Doesn't look like there are any brake upgrades. A 20g wrx will get up to speed pretty quick and the stock brakes are barely up to the task with stock turbo. JIC coilovers are typically sprung with mad tyte break y0 back on the streetz jdm rates.

In general, I wouldn't worry too much about light mods. If there are any power mods, you will want to see what kind of engine management is being used (if any). Otherwise, I'm of the opinion that maintenance and care are more important than mods and miles when buying these cars used.

At the end of the day, it's just a Subaru. There are a few nuances to Subaru's, but it sounds like you're mechanically inclined so I'm sure you'll catch on quickly. If not, you have a pretty decent resource in MNSubaru.

Thanks for all the input guys! Sorry to hear the car was a big problem for your buddy...I'd love to be able to pick it up and work through the problems, but I just don't have that kind of money right now. I do learn pretty quickly when it comes to things I'm passionate about (cars, especially), but yeah, I've never owned/worked on a Subaru so it'd be a learning experience. I think I'll stick to getting a fairly unmodded WRX.

    TSTRBOY,

I'd check out that link, but I'm still unable to view the classified forum due to not having enough posts :emo: Oh well, soon enough haha. Thanks again guys!

Before I forget, is there anything I should look for on the silver WRX I'm checking out this weekend? Will definitely be taking it for a test drive, so it'd be nice to know what to pay attention for.

tranny, pay attention to how it shifts, and let it warm up too, drive it for awhile so the tranny fluid is warm.

Well...Just called the dealership to see if they still had the car, and it sold :( So back to the search I guess...as soon as I can see the for sale forum I'll probably poke around on there to see if there's anything interesting up for sale from anyone here, since I've got direct access to information about them. Ah well!
