Hello, I'm looking at potentially picking up an Outback 3.0R ll bean from out of state, but I haven't driven one. Coming from LGT wagons, I'd imagine it's a bit different, but would like to get some feedback from anyone who's owned one, and potentially go for a ride/test drive a local one before committing to a car that's several hours away. Anyone able to help me out? Thanks.
Think Jordan's outback is the 3.0 granted thats pretty new compared to what it sounds like your looking at?
I ASSume that by "3.0R", you mean a 2005-2009, right? We have a 2004 VDC, and I love it. But, some of the things that I love about ours are specifically gone on the BL/BP cars. They'll all have DBW and immobilizer (ditto with the XT...so you're probably used to that). Good news is they have the 5AT with VTD AWD, which is a fantastic transmission.
Yea, I figured you would be. I know the BE/BHs inside and out, but have had very limited hands-on experience with the BL/BP cars. So other than saying that the second gen EZ30D and 5EAT/VTD is a fantastic drivetrain, I really can't say.
Me? I had the 3.6 Legacy. Awesome engine though, and the 3.0's have a good reputation too. The 5EAT is also supposed to be pretty reliable.
Right my mistake. I have enjoyed the 5EAT in my wagon more then expected. Granted I drive it pretty much only in sport mode and maybe its just in my head but it does seem alot more responsive with its shift points in sport.
Agreed, sport is the only way to drive the 5EAT. It doesn't struggle with the whole "which gear should I be in" thing, that I get in "regular" mode. The shifts seem alot more on point, and make it a fun car to drive. Its by far the most reliable vehicle that I've ever owned, and not worrying about head gasket issues, is great. It's not a monster that puts down 300hp at the wheels, but it puts a smile on my face every day. @derp, get ahold of me, and you can take mine for a spin tonight, if you are available.
Yeah, I think the only Subaru place I'm not on, is MNSubiez. I think they have an age limit over there. I'm almost 40, and a somewhat responsible adult, so I don't think they'd accept me.
Maybe we could get a representative to cross post LaXCruise over on Midwest Subaru what-havu's if you are on there? I see they are having a meet in two weekends up in Fridley? Also, derp FTW.
I'd rather not be on a cruise with a bunch of stanceboi ****tards trying to race on 27 degrees of negative camber with cut springs or racelands.
Back to the topic at hand... I had a 2008 Legacy 3.0R sedan for a while. I kinda regret selling it. I imagine the performance of the wagon is slightly worse with the extra weight. The EZ30D is a nice motor. Smooth and pulls nicely. The 5EAT is leaps above the 4EAT. Much less clunky. I can't compare to a turbo Legacy, but the 3.0 never felt underpowered to me, unlike the N/A 4 cyl. The EZ30D is also known for being very reliable and long living. I didn't have mine long enough to know personally. My only complaints are that it really did run better on premium (89 or above) fuel. There was noticable light pinging on 87. Also the plugs are nearly impossible to change without the exact right tools or lifting the engine.
thanks @sneefy I run premium on everything I own all the time, so I'm not worried there. I'm so used to turbo cars that everything pretty much gets BP93 and that'll likely be a habit I don't break quickly. I realize it's not going to be as fast as my modified turbo wagon, but as mentioned I'm looking for more of a daily, so as long as it's quick enough, it should be alright. I'm meeting @housemusic1 tonight to get a feel for it.
thanks @housemusic1 for the drive. seems like something I can live with, may have to pick this up if I can get them to a price I want.
Jeez, all this time and I never knew they made the Beanie trim on the 2005...huh. What state is it in? Outside of the rust belt? Number of miles?
It's in Iowa, but they sent a ton of pictures of the underside of the car and it looks like it had extremely minimal rust on anything. It's got 125k miles. Made the deal, they went down to 6500 out the door. I'm ok with that.
Going to try to head down on Saturday. anyone up for a road trip? Mods will be kept to a minimum on this one, it's specifically why I went naturally aspirated and automatic. Wheels (which I already have), suspension which is just takeoffs from an LGT (unfortunately sold mine to Var), rear sways, and that's probably gonna be it.
You should stance that thing bruh! Mad amounts of negative camber, stretched rubber, and a sweet Fatlace sticker across the front windshield. Go big, or go home. ***In all seriousness though, you'll need to grab some 1/2" or 3/4" rear saggy butt spacers, or she'll be dragging ass when you put on the LGT bits. It's a common issue with lowering an Outback. Also be sure to swap over the LGT bump stops too. I forget to mention that on our little drive the other day.
Damn my sister was about to pick that one up today lol but you must have put a deposit down. Her car died on the way back from colorado and was in the area. You bastard
Usually when you find them at a dealer, they've got 250K+ miles, and haven't been treated too well. Nice find @derp, she will treat you very well.
Hopefully. There's a white one locally with a douchey intake in the engine pic. That means I wouldn't touch it. Who knows what other errors in judgement the previous owner inflicted upon it. You probably saw it while you were looking around.
the one in Iowa is a turd too. I passed on it. It needed all 4 axles replaced as there was a ton of play in the rears and both front inner cv boots were completely torn. Also had slop in the driveshaft center carrier. Needed 4 new tires on top of that. Also had rust sneaking through the drivers rear arch All in all the dealer did a good job of hiding that with the pictures they sent and the ones they had on the website. Disappointed that I drove the distance to see it, but it was the right call to skip it.
Damn, sorry to hear that man. At least you didn't have them ship it all the way to your place, then be S.O.L. They really did a good job hiding all that in the pics. Sucks that you lost a whole Saturday out of it, but you did the right thing.
I had a great time hanging out with @Mnelson and talking about finger blasting some sisters in convertible Pontiacs
Oh damn I guess thats why it was so cheap for a 3.0R. How bad was the rear rust? you didn't take any pictures did you? The rest of that stuff is pretty easy to fix, did you try negotiating lower becasue of the issues? My sister still needs a car and if we could get it cheaper then maybe it would be worth it.
They apparently had someone else in line. Rust was enough to show in the door jam under the wheel arch cover body molding thing. It also had a windshield that was installed very poorly, and there were some signs of gaskets on the engine being needed. All in all if you can get it for like 4 grand it may be worth it but it was enough wrong that they did a real good job of hiding in the pictures that made me not trust the car at all. I bet I know why it was traded in lol.
Thanks man, we will def pass on it. I bet they were talking about us as the "someone else in line" lol
