All right boys and girls. Here is your chance to get out and show your stuff and/or learn how to do it in the dirt. A RallyCross 101 thread should be posted very soon for an overview of what RallCross is all about. I will add a link to it from here when it is ready.
yup. There is a stock class. I'm not sure what the cutoff is on the helmet requirements, though. IIRC, it's an M95 or M2000 (or Snell equiv.) or newer helmet that is needed.
Is Jim Cox running this one again? I have not been to a RallyCross in a number of years but was at like EVERY event from 2002 - 2005. I used to always get dibs on the water hose and have entirely too much fun... Maybe I'll make an appearance. It would be really good to see everyone again... This one is from that venue.
I might go and spectate. my car's suspension no longer likes things that are not flat, even pavement lol
Car looks sweet the way it is. But lets face it, he would bottom out on a beer bottle cap. ...Carl, since you are not really in need of those mudflaps...you could sell them to someone that could use them. <<<<<<hint-hint
I would bet that Jim Cox will be there. I know he is working on getting his rally truck ready for Ojibwe Forest Rally and this would be a good time for him to test it out.
He's ALWAYS working on that thing... ha ha ha. We wre the 1st car behind him when he put it directly into a tree 2 years ago - when young Donnovan was right-seating for him. It's his style to not sleep for 3 days before a rally fevorously tweaking that thing. Ha ha ha.
I have to work Saturday but I might toss the 16's on and head out on Sunday. Corcoran is a fun place to rallyx.
Brent Calson is the Rallymaster for this one, but you can be sure that Jim will be involved too, as he's the connection to the Lion's club. Corcoran's surface is very smooth and gentle to cars. The dust is also a lot less because we have to water the course to keep the land owners & neighbors happy. I'll be there for sure on Saturday running the SE-R. I might be there on Sunday, at least part of the day helping out with the school.
Hi Guys, My wife and I will be coming up for the event and this time we're planning on coming up the day before and spending the night in the area. Are there any specific hotels/areas that you guys would recommend? We're coming from SE WI, so we would prefer not to go too far North or West of Corcoran. Also, with the Mall of America in the area we'll likely be visiting there for my wife, if that factors in. Thanks in advance, --Josh
considering corcoran is not all that far from the twin cities, it shouldn't matter very much. you could even stay by the MOA and your drive out wouldn't be too bad. anywhere in the northwest burbs will work too (plymouth, maple grove).
His truck is AWESOME -- and unfortunately, my old car was classed in the same class as his. I still managed to place 2nd in the class (but it was like 8 seconds behind, lol) in the one event I managed to make last summer. I'm looking forward to getting killed by Mr. Cox yet again!
I completely concour. I wish I could have seen my face when I saw that thing for the first time... "You have HOW MANY inches of suspension travel?!!?" I do want to point out that it is possible to beat guys that are in classes "above" yours. Treadin' Thin Ice, 2004 I took 2nd overall in a completely stock 4cyl front-wheel-drive car. I beat a couple of OpenClass guys. So for those of you who may be new to the sport, all you have to do is pick good lines and STAY CLEAN.
And I beat the whole field the first time I ran my SE-R, which was completely stock, on $40 walmart tires. Now it's fairly modified and on Hankook gravels and I haven't managed to win my class yet this year. I need to get my exahust taken care of in the next couple of weeks. If I could just get the hang of the new welder... Gonna run the new rex Ted? Wanna borrow a set of Pirelli KM61s on Raceline RL-7s (would bump you to prepared tho)?
Yeah, but that old SER had the stage 4 weight reduction (oxidation) going on, didn't it? I think we were going to weld some new metal to hold your door frames on, weren't we??? $hit. I just walked upstairs to check the white board (that rules my life) and I have surprise party for my old man that day. crap.
Damn, this is tempting. What concerns me though, that I don't have skid plates, somewhat lowered, and on pretty stiff springs... I think soft summer tires wont like gravel, so does it make sense to bring winter tires with lots of deep tread?
Don't sweat the skid plates, they're far from needed at Corcoran. It's smooth. Are you lowered more than a stock STi? If not, you're still plenty high. I've run it on my 215/45-17 Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s and the traction was good. Winter tires? If they're Blizzaks, leave them at home. Hakkas? Bring 'em.
Rally Cross 101 Check out this thread for pictures and info about RallyCross. If you are thinking of going and not sure about the surface, check out the pictures from Corcoran's last year event. I ran last year on street tires, and did fine. http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17715
The overhead picture is of Cannon Falls South of the Twin Cities. We will be running at Corcoran. We do run the entire course at Cannon Falls when we race there. I think September 23 is the next Cannon Falls race.
The course at Cannon Falls has been shortened up somewhat from the original. The original was over 3 minutes long for many people, and that's a little too much for most people's comfort. It's still very nice and actually a bit more open and flowing, rather than a lot shorter.
Honestly, since it's the same price (as far as I know) do do one or both days, I would just jump in and run Saturday. You'll have a much better idea what you need to learn on Sunday. You don't have to try and win Saturday, just get a feel for it.
so if I want to go and shoot pictures, do spectators have very good viewing or is there some way I can get closer to the action? The longest lens I have is 18-200mm which might be good enough
That'll do fine for a lens. You aren't super far away from the cars (since it's a low speed event). If you are down near the course, you will have to have a spotter, however.
Just a note to those thinking about runing, the club does have loaner helmets, so don't let not owning one stop you. Having your own is obviously nicer. I love my G-Force Hybrid (closed face with chin bar, but a wide eyeport like an open face and only a sun visor, not a full visor.)
good. I will bring a spotter then because I would like to try and get some really good action shots. gotta practice that high speed panning you know lol That's what I have - kind of a hassle if you wear glasses and kind of hot but it's worked well when i've gone lapping before
$50 for both days?! Nice! Are there gonna be someone to ride with me during saturday, so that I'm not completely alone on my first run?
Unfortunately, the rules do not allow passengers for Divisional events and this is a Divisional. You will be able to do as much riding or giving rides as you want on Sunday. Feel free to find me and I will be happy to give you some tips on how to easily find your way around the first few times. I'll be the fat bald old guy in the ratty red GC-8 (see avatar for what the car looks like). The less you worry about how you look or how fast your going, the more fun you'll have. After a few events, THAT'S when to get serious about your speed.
More adrenaline then. Are course walks allowed? Although I guess even if not, it will be perfect practice of 'looking ahead' I need for autox anyway I will. Is there a good beginner summary somewhere? Like what to bring, what to expect, what tire pressure to use etc? And when I register online, should I register for both days separately or only Saturday will do?
Course walks are certainly allowed. Amy has a RallyCross 101 here; http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17715 I suggest you bring some food, bug spray, warm weather clothes, rain gear (we run rain or shine), maybe basic tools, maybe a full size spare, lawn chairs, lots to drink (NO ALCOHOL), helmet, means to pay entry fee, footwear that can be worn in mud, and a desire to have fun. Tire pressures vary based on car, alignment and tires but I suggest starting at the tire manufacturer's maximum and adjust from there if needed. I will tell you I have adjusted tire pressure once at a rallycross. I set them and just drive the car. I also recommend you read the flyer in this thread if you haven't already. That's all I can think of for now. Anyone should feel free to offer their suggestions also.
